Here's How Long Your Plastic Storage Containers Really Last
By CARRIE BRADON
Plastic food storage containers, such as those from Tupperware or Ziploc, typically last between five to 10 years, making them a worthwhile investment given their low cost.
However, several factors can affect their longevity, including heavy usage, visible wear and tear, and stubborn food stains, all of which can signal that it's time to replace them.
If a container shows signs of deterioration, such as scratches, lingering odors, or deformities from microwave or dishwasher use, it's wise to consider replacing it.
Moreover, older containers, especially those made before 2010, may contain Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical tied to health concerns, making them potentially unsafe for continued use.
To ensure your plastic containers remain safe, it's best to retire them if they've been in use for several years or if they show any of these telltale signs of deterioration.
