Follow Nate Berkus' Tip For A Cohesive Paint Color For Open Floor Plans
By V BAWA
Open floor plans allow functional flow between a home’s living spaces. HGTV’s Nate Berkus prefers maintaining aesthetic cohesion as well by using the same paint color throughout.
The design problem with open floor plans is how to define the different spaces. Homeowners often use accent walls as an easy way to show where one room ends and the next begins.
However, Berkus advises against this: “I think that accent walls show a lack of commitment and I think it's very difficult to actually do a bold color in an open floor plan.”
“Keep your ceilings white, and [...] pick one shade, one tone … for the rest of the walls,” Berkus recommends. Go with a uniform color and explore other ways to carve out zones.
A simple yet impactful way to highlight a zone is to focus on the doors. If there are multiple entries, apply different colors to the doors, the trim, and the inside of the doors.
