To remove paint drips from your hardwood floors, you must identify if it’s latex-based (water-based) or oil-based paint, as the paint type will determine how best to get rid of it.
A newly spilled latex-based paint can quickly be removed with a mixture of soap and warm water. Wipe away the paint spill with a clean cloth, then repeat with fresh soap and water.
Clean freshly spilled oil-based paint with some mineral spirits (paint thinner) applied to a cotton cloth. When the paint’s softened, gently remove it with a non-abrasive scraper.
For old paint stains, use a heat gun to melt both latex and oil paint. Be very careful when using a heat gun, as it can reach temperatures as high as 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Wear heavy-duty gloves, work in a well-ventilated area, and keep the gun at least 2 inches away from the floor at an angle. Never focus on one spot, as heat guns can burn wood.
Pass the heat gun over the stain several times until the paint bubbles, then remove it with a non-abrasive scraper. Repeat as needed, then clean the area when all paint is removed.
