Crucial Things To Know Before Using Egg Cartons For Home DIY Projects
By CHRYSS MAE SEGOVIA
From artwork to organization, there are so many things you can do with empty egg cartons; however, it’s crucial to use them safely and hygienically, especially with kids’ crafts.
As egg cartons have held raw eggs and may harbor bacteria like salmonella, always clean and sanitize them before using them in a DIY project, particularly those involving plants.
First, brush off any crumbs or residue, then spritz the egg cartons with white vinegar. Bear in mind that cardboard egg cartons can never be used for food storage, even if cleaned.
Don’t let kids work with egg cartons unsupervised, and preferably pre-cut them into big pieces, as small pieces left over from cutting can pose a choking hazard for small children.
Be cautious when using egg cartons to make homemade fire starters, as cardboard is highly flammable. Avoid using plastic cartons because they could release toxic fumes when burned.
