Craftsman Vs. Ranch-Style Homes: What's The Difference?
By LUCY CLARK
Craftsman Appearance
Craftsman and ranch-style homes have similar architectural features — low pitched roofs, a flatter design style, and similar siding. In craftsman homes, though, beams and rafters are intentionally left exposed, and painted wood siding, stone and stucco accents, and sash windows are common.
Ranch Appearance
Whereas craftsman-style homes focus on the architect's skill, ranch-style homes focus on an open and accessible layout, specifically emphasizing space. They tend to be flush with the ground, focus more on back porch space, and have multiple large windows and overhanging eaves.
Craftsman History
Craftsman-style homes came into being in the 1860s during the Arts and Crafts movement. By the turn of the 20th century, the craftsman home reigned supreme, becoming the most popular architectural style from 1905 into the 1920s.
Ranch-Style History
Ranch-style homes became popular in the 1930s, and as suburbs expanded, so did the popularity of ranch homes. In the 1950s, as the population was greatly increasing, nine out of every 10 new homes was a ranch-style home.
