Be Sure To Avoid These Common Mistakes When Steam Cleaning Laundry

Burns
Garment steamers can cause serious burns, so never steam your clothes while wearing them, and take care not to aim it at any body parts. Preferably, use a steaming glove.
Minerals in tap water clog a steamer, making it work less effectively or even shortening its lifespan. Use distilled water instead, which has had most minerals removed.
They can damage suede, velvet, velour, and any fabric with a wax coating. Also, avoid steaming certain appliques and plastic parts, and anything that seems meltable or fragile.
Most fabrics can be steamed, but always check the fabric care label. Even if it doesn't warn against it, just to be safe, always do a test patch on new clothing.
Steam a spot where damage is least likely to be noticeable, like under a collar or the bottom button panel. If that spot doesn't show any damage after drying, you can proceed.
Check the manufacturer's directions on the time your steamer needs to heat up before use. Using it too early can cause it to spit scalding water, which can be dangerous.
The droplets can also leave water marks on some fabrics, which take longer to dry. Starting too soon can also cause an irregular jet, which is less effective at removing wrinkles.
