Selecting the right contractor is crucial when undertaking a project and according to renovation expert Jasmine Roth, there are some major red flags you should look out for.
Poor communication and being too agreeable are at the top of her list. “If the contractor doesn’t have everything in writing [...] quit while you’re ahead,” Roth writes on her blog.
Another red flag is not pulling permits or licenses and insurance as they are proof your contractor is fit for the job and will complete the project while respecting building codes.
Too-good-to-believe prices are another one as a low bid can mean that the contractor uses extremely cheap materials or will cut corners and not complete the job properly.
A slew of bad or an absence of reviews is also concerning, especially if a business has been around for a while. For newer contractors, use your judgment when speaking to them.
It’s best to rely on word of mouth when picking a contractor. You can also conduct a face-to-face meeting and look at their previous projects before making a decision.
