Wisteria
Native and Japanese wisteria grow comfortably on a fence, provided it’s sturdy enough. However, be aware that they damage paint, and the Chinese variety can be invasive.
Lady of Shalott, Gertrude Jekyll, and the classic Sweetheart Rose are perfect for growing along a fence, and the 15-foot New Dawn variety is ideal for a tall fence.
Slow-growing, climbing hydrangeas grow to 80 feet long and like cool temperatures. Hydrangea paniculata shrubs grow tall but are deciduous, so add evergreens for privacy.
Clematis grows abundant blooms in a wide range of colors that can easily cover a wall or fence. Contrast varieties with vivid colors or blend varieties with subtler shades.
You can successfully grow small azaleas in front of a picket or iron fence or large azalea bushes behind it, provided your fence is in a shaded area and the soil is acidic.
