When deciding on flooring for your home, there are quite a few things you'll need to think about. Superior Stone & Cabinet says to begin by considering where the flooring will be installed. Will it carry throughout the house or be confined to certain rooms? The durability of the material you choose is also important. How much maintenance and cleaning are you prepared to provide? Also, think about your aesthetics and style. You'll want to choose a floor that looks cohesive with the rest of your home. In your search for the right flooring for your home, you may wonder which type is the most popular. House Digest surveyed 596 people and asked them what type is their favorite. Participants could choose from the following options: hardwood, laminate, carpet, tile, and vinyl. We've got the results, and they probably won't shock you.

The most popular flooring

Over 60% of those polled (360 people) said that their favorite floors are hardwood. This classic choice is popular for a number of reasons, per A Plus Hardwood Floors. Hardwood looks luxurious and serves to elevate a space. It can make a home look warmer and more inviting. And, because there are many colors to choose from, you can decide on the look that best fits your style. Hardwood floors last for a long time, and they're easy to clean. They shouldn't stain, and they won't collect pet hairs or dust.

However, hardwood comes with a steep price tag. It's typically the most expensive flooring available. Millennium Floors says that it may require sanding and polishing, which will come at an extra cost. But, it's also cost-effective because it usually doesn't have to be replaced for a long time. If you choose hardwood, you should think of your floors as an investment. Another con is that this flooring can be noisy when walking.

Other popular choices

The second most popular option is carpet, which over 15% (91 participants) chose. According to Heritage Custom Builders LLC, carpet is less expensive and noisy than hardwood. It can also create a more cozy and homey feeling space. And it's easier and faster to install. However, carpet isn't as easy to clean or maintain, and it won't work in kitchens or bathrooms.

The next most popular option was laminate, which almost 12% (71 people) chose. Carpet Call Floor Centre says that laminate is also less expensive than hardwood and very durable. It's typically resistant to scratches and fading in the sun. And it's easy to install and clean. However, laminate can't be sanded and polished, so it won't last as long as hardwood. It's also not moisture-proof, which means it may not be the best option for kitchens or bathrooms.

Almost 9% (53 participants) chose tile as their favorite flooring. Finally, vinyl came in last, with about 3.5% or 21 participants.
