Keith Bynum's Simple Painting Hacks You Have To Try

When you think about painting your home, odds are your first choice is to paint the entire room a subtle color, but why not shake things up and make your walls really pop? Perhaps there's no room in your budget for unique and stand-out designs ... or is there? HGTV's "Bargain Block" host, Keith Bynum, offers a few ideas on how to do just that. He and his co-host, Evan Thomas, renovate abandoned properties at an affordable rate using low-cost techniques that you can use the next time you want a new paint job.

Bynum debunks the myth that renovating your home has to cost you an arm and a leg when there are much simpler and cost-effective ways to do so. According to HGTV, "Bargain Block" amassed 20 million viewers in its first season, so it's safe to say these guys know a thing or two about renovating homes on a budget.

Use painter's tape to create designs

Keith Bynum from HGTV suggests using painter's tape to give your walls a makeover. On average, wallpaper is significantly more expensive than paint, says My Move, so why not cut costs and create an abstract pattern with paint? Not only is it cost-effective, but it doesn't require any special tools. All you need is painter's tape, paint, and a paint roller. To use this method, place your tape on the wall in whatever pattern you want. Use your chosen paint color to paint the entire wall (even over the tape). Once it's dry, peel off the tape to reveal your design.

Another benefit of using this method is the ability to switch up your designs. You can keep things simple with horizontal stripes, or go for something more technical like a cris-cross pattern. If you really want to kick things up a notch, Bynum recommends using different sized brushes and strokes to create more texture.

Go bold with color choices

Stop playing it safe with muted neutral paint colors and go for something bold, Keith Bynum says (via HGTV). It's the easiest and least expensive way to add a little bit of flavor to a room. Dreamplan Builder says bright, bold colors are stimulating and create a visual impact. They make the room seem more dramatic and elegant as well. Additionally, bold colors can actually enhance your mood because they make your home feel more lively, and colors like blue and green can make you feel more relaxed, Swedish states.

Bynum also suggests painting side-by-side rooms in two bold, contrasting colors. This creates depth in the rooms, making them an instant eye-catcher and a focal point in your home. If you want to go bold but can't commit to painting the entire room, pick an accent wall to start. This way you can ease into boldness. According to The Painting Company, accent walls create dimension and can actually make the room feel bigger.

Create decorative shapes

Keith Bynum explains that large, bold shapes can really enhance a space, no matter which paint color you choose, per HGTV. Geometric shapes create a focal point in the room and give the space more personality. Painting decorative shapes on your walls also gives you a way to experiment with the space without spending a ton of money. My Domaine suggests first choosing which wall you want to place your shapes. There is such a thing as too many shapes, so an accent wall is the best route to take. To make these shapes, you can use the painter's tape hack we discussed earlier, or use a pencil, thumbtack, and string to create a DIY protractor.

Another hack is to place furniture in front of shapes with any mistakes you may have made. My Domaine also recommends adding juxtaposition with your shapes. If you've been using a lot of straight lines, switch things up and throw some curved or squiggly shapes in there. This will easily add dimension to the space.
