Make The Perfect Planter Set For Your Accent Wall Using A Dollar Tree DIY

If you're looking to brighten your walls with some greenery and flowers, we have the right DIY for you. Using some simple Dollar Tree finds and a bit of creativity, you can DIY a pretty planter set that can go directly onto your wall. These small DIY planters can be used to hold cut flowers, fake plants, and dried florals.

The idea for this hack is to use small Crafter's Square wood planks from Dollar Tree and a simple wood stain like this DecoArt Americana gel stain to create small vertical boxes with an open top. Once attached to a wall, they can act as flower holders. They're small and delicate and can be customized to really fit your style. It's a fun and easy DIY that you can do in an afternoon to brighten up your space and flex your arts and crafts muscles.

To do this hack, you'll also need a saw to cut the planks, some wood glue to attach the pieces together, and a brush or sponge to apply the stain. To attach the boxes to the wall, get some command strips.

Steps to make your own DIY planter set

This hack starts with some measuring and cutting. The goal is to create a one-sided box with four pieces of wood: one main rectangle and three thinner ones for the sides and bottom. When cutting these thin and narrow pieces, make sure that they all have the same width (around 2 or 3 inches) and match the length to the sides of the main rectangle.

Once done, the idea is to have the wall act as the other side of the box, so there is only a slim opening at the top where you can fit the flowers. The exact dimensions of the box are based on your aesthetic preferences. You can create three simple and identical boxes like @mwahl89_ does in the video, or experiment with shapes and sizes. The boxes can range from squares to long and narrow rectangles to hold a single flower or branch.

Attach the pieces with glue and stain the wood to make it look darker for a rustic vibe. Alternatively, you can use some white or colorful paint for something more modern and bright. Another creative idea is to use decoupage to create seamless patterns, covering the wood with decorative napkins and Mod Podge. You can even use glue to attach family photos to the boxes if you'd like the planter to double as a photo frame. To attach the boxes to the wall, cut thin sections from a command strip and place them on both sides where the wood meets the wall.

Can these DIY planters hold real plants and flowers?

Because this DIY is a simple wooden box used to display flowers, there are some limitations. Mainly, this DIY planter set is not waterproof and cannot be used as a regular vase. As such, do not use this for any plants or flowers that require moisture. If you're using the set to display fresh cut flowers and would like them to last, simply pop the stems into plastic floral water tubes from Royal Imports, and then slide them into the planter.

Similarly, this won't work for plants that require any soil and water. Instead, consider some fake greenery like this artificial hanging plants set from Palonu. If you're not a fan of the droopy leafy look, you can also look into some dried pampas grass from Anproor or some decorative twigs. You can even dry and style your own flowers to truly make this wall accent match your interior design style.

To make these DIY hanging wall planters easier to use, you can also fill them with some floral foam so you can easily poke your faux and dried flowers into the bottom to perfectly arrange each stem. Again, remember not to add any water to the foam to prevent damaging the planter and the wall.
