Turn Jar Lids Into A Unique Storage Basket With A Budget-Friendly Upcycling DIY
In the U.S. alone, each person disposes of about 4.9 pounds of trash each day, per Environment America. The jar lids you toss into the trash once you've used up whatever product or food item was once inside of the jar contribute to this, so consider repurposing your jar lids instead. You can turn a lid into a unique storage basket with a budget-friendly upcycling DIY that can be completed in a few simple steps. All you'll have to do is use hot glue, fabric, and rope to decorate the lid, glue popsicle sticks all around the outside of the lid, and then wrap rope around the sticks from the bottom up to form a basket.
Lastly, you also have the option to thread ribbon through the rope to create a decorative pattern. The end result is a trendy rope basket that resembles similar storage items you can find at popular home and decor stores for a hefty price. Opt for this DIY over store-bought options to save money and reduce waste. Don't think this basket would suit your visual preferences? Feel free to personalize it however you'd like. You can customize your basket by using colorful rope instead of plain brown rope or attaching handles to the top of it. Take some time to really make it yours.
How to turn a jar lid into a rope basket
To build this basket, you'll need a hot glue gun, a roll of thin rope, a roll of thicker rope, fabric, and popsicle sticks.Opt for brown rope as featured in the video for a rustic or nautical look, or select a different color if you prefer something more vibrant. You could make your selection among the NOANTA Coffee Cord color options.
Start out by using hot glue to attach fabric or decorative contact paper over the top of a circular piece of cardboard small enough to fit inside of your lid. Glue the fabric-covered cardboard circle inside of the lid. Next, glue one layer of your thin rope around the inside of the lid, followed by a second layer of your thicker rope.
To finish up, hot glue popsicle sticks evenly spaced around the lid. You can then use hot glue to wrap your rope around the sticks from the bottom up and form a basket. Consider using a few different colors of rope to create a pattern while working your way up the sticks. If you only have plain light brown rope on hand, you could also enhance your completed basket by using Rit Dye All Purpose Liquid Dye to create an ombre effect. When you're done, you could roll your small towels and store them in the basket. Alternatively, consider placing fruit inside of your DIY storage basket and display it in your kitchen. The possibilities are endless.
