Creating a beautiful and functional outdoor space is a popular combination, especially if you're in your gardening era. Sadly, the luxury of new decorative plant pots isn't in everyone's budget. One way to beat the store prices is to make your own using things you no longer need. There are plenty of household items that can be repurposed into beautiful flower vases, but have you thought about turning them into a hanging garden display? This is exactly what content creator, Sherinzz, did with some twine and a couple of mugs.

The concept is simple enough — string is tied between coffee cups by the handles and then these vessels are filled with soil and greenery. Sherinzz chose Turtle Vine or Creeping-Inch plant (Callisia repens), but any plant you can grow in a shallow pot will work. This would be a great way to incorporate succulents into your patio area or grow herbs near your outdoor kitchen. If you're looking for an affordable garden feature with a cozy vintage vibe, this DIY might be perfect.

Putting together your DIY mug planters

Before getting started on your rustic garden feature, you'll need a few supplies. Fortunately, this is a simple project, and once you've got materials assembled, you can transform thrifted teacups into the most adorable garden decor in no time. Select two or three mugs that suit your aesthetic, and pick up some strong string like Perkhomy garden twine. One thing Sherinzz didn't show in their video was how they installed drainage holes. For this, you'll need a drill with a diamond bit. With these items prepped, it's time to begin.

To drill a hole in a ceramic mug, have a constant stream of water nearby to keep continuous lubrication. Flip the mug over and go from the bottom, starting on an angle and eventually evening out until it goes clean through. Fill the mug with soil and your choice of greenery and repeat with the other one or two cups. String the twine through the handles, tying them securely about 12 inches apart and hang them where they look best. This looks particularly lovely with elegant vintage-style teacups. As you design and plant the perfect cottage garden this year, consider hanging a few DIY planters to add to the effect without breaking the bank.
