Jenny Marrs Reveals The Countertop Material That Instantly Dates Your Home

When spending your hard-earned money on home renovations, you want the end result to feel elegant and effortless, not tacky and outdated. Details like countertop material can make or break a room's aesthetic, which is why it's sometimes best to ask the experts. Choosing an unfashionable countertop is one renovation mistake your favorite HGTV stars want you to avoid at all costs. Expert designer and star of HGTV's "Fixer to Fabulous" Jenny Marrs reveals that using materials like cultured marble could make your home look and feel out of date.

Cultured marble is a synthetic alternative to natural marble and is one of the countertop choices HGTV stars are tired of seeing in homes. The versatile material mimics the texture and appearance of real marble by blending crushed marble, resins, and dyes. Genuine marble has more depth and complexity and a less glossy appearance than its artificial counterpart. Cultured marble is a budget-friendly alternative to high-end marble countertops, but it's going out of style. Luckily, the Marrs' have some go-to alternatives they've used when renovating homes to achieve a more updated look.

Jenny Marrs' advice on choosing countertops

Jenny Marrs works alongside her husband Dave on their show "Fixer to Fabulous" to redesign and renovate lackluster, aged houses into dream homes for deserving families. In Season 5 Episode 4 of "Fixer to Fabulous," Jenny Marrs remarks on the blue streaks in the main bathroom's cultured marble countertop, asking, "Is this toothpaste or is this the marble?" They replaced the dated white-and-blue countertop with a sleek, modern black granite in the kitchen and bathroom. Jenny Marrs shared that she wanted to achieve a more neutral design. In a similar kitchen update, she emphasizes that "The contrast between the dark counters and natural wood cabinets adds just the right amount of depth."

She has also demonstrated how simple white countertops can help brighten a space through other designs she completed for their show. In previous renovations, she's used durable white quartz countertops for a clean, airy feel and a sleek look. The Marrs shared on their Instagram page that a simple way to transform a "dark and outdated kitchen" is by pairing minimalistic, white countertops with natural wood. When it comes time to choose from different types of marble countertops, sometimes less is more. Experts like Marrs advise against choosing busy imitation marble. Instead, opt for simpler neutral countertops for an updated, modern look.
