When we think of accent walls, we think of bold colors and maybe an eye-catching design. But what if your accent wall also served a purpose and gave a pop of elegance to your next dinner party? A well-executed accent wall can liven up your home, and this one is just as much for guests as it for you. Enter the wine bottle accent wall.

Depending on your taste, there are a couple different ways to go about bringing this wall to life. You could DIY your own stylish wine rack to give it a personal touch. You can make a custom wine rack from old PVC pipes, wood, metal or whatever material suits your preferences. Or, you could opt for something that's already built that you just have to mount. These range in style and price, from the higher end Vintage View flex wall-mounted wine rack system to the more affordable B4Life wine rack. To create your own rack system, mount bottles individually using wine pegs, wire hooks, or display stands.

Where to place a wine bottle accent wall

When choosing a location for your wine rack accent wall, keep in mind that direct sunlight or too much heat can make the wine go bad. The accent wall should be somewhere in the house that stays cool and is away from direct sunlight. The best temperature to store wine is at a consistent 55 degrees Fahrenheit, with humidity between 70% and 90%, so look for a placement that can maintain these conditions.

The wine rack wall should also be somewhere people can see and take advantage of it, but not somewhere the wine bottles could be easily knocked off the wall. Good spots are in the dining room or family room where a lot of entertaining happens. Areas that might not be as suitable are those with heavy foot traffic, like hallways or entryways. The wall itself should have plenty of space to hang the bottles and should be easily accessible.

Before you hang your wine racks, consider using graph paper to map out exactly how you want it to look. You can draw your wall to scale and where each wine bottle will go, keeping in mind that wine bottles are typically 12 inches long with a roughly 3-inch diameter. This will make the eventual hanging process much easier. Once it is in place, it's time for the fun part: sorting. Arrange the wine bottles by type, vintage, country, or brand. You could even put pricier bottles at the top, keeping them out of reach until a special occasion arrises.
