The Type Of Furniture HGTV's Erin Napier Is Tired Of Seeing In Homes

When it comes to trends, keeping up-to-date can feel a little overwhelming. However, as always, HGTV stars like Erin Napier are usually sharing their knowledge and opinions across multiple platforms so that you can pull design ideas and advice from them whenever you need it. For furniture trends, it seems there are some furniture styles HGTV stars can't stand seeing in homes. Napier, the star of "Home Town," noted in an interview that rather than seeing materials like wood painted over in a home, she would prefer natural wood designs in all their grained and stained glory. As styles and aesthetics lean more into traditional and even nostalgic decor, Napier's preferences are not only very on trend, but also offer homeowners and renters reprieve from shopping for expensive items. The authentic wood look allows them to lean into antique or preowned pieces that can be upgraded and still offer a natural finish.

Napier explained in a PopSugar interview that "The organic movement in wood grain is art!" The natural grain of wood creates dimension and texture all on its own should you want a more elevated design without bringing a lot of different materials into your home. Some pieces of wood may already come painted, and older or thrifted woods may need a little TLC to get the natural warm tones of the wood back. This is where sanding and re-staining come in. Don't be afraid to get a piece of wood back to its natural state by removing paint or choosing a different stain.

Use natural wood furniture to add warmth

Whether you want to decorate your home like Erin Napier's or just like her style, she is very on trend (as is natural wood). Wood is an excellent way to bring nature into your home in a way that both flows and helps ground your space. This likely plays into why Napier is so partial to plain wood over painted versions. Painted finishes do take away from the warmth brought by organic materials. While there are hacks to make IKEA furniture look like genuine wood, it may still create a more engaging layout to try and find natural wood rather than painting your own faux wood. This doesn't mean you can't own painted furniture, or that you should only shop for real, natural wood. Just consider using the latter before going out and buying painted pieces (or painting over existing wood).

The great thing about this trend is that it does allow you to really dig into those secondhand pieces, or find inexpensive wood furnishings that only need stain if you want a different color. Should you already own a nice vintage piece, make sure to showcase this and really turn it into a focal point within your home, as wood items can really be statement pieces. Unassuming yet stylish, natural wood furnishings create a great base for you to build your theme or aesthetic around. Natural wood also matches a variety of trends, meaning you don't have to change your entire layout based on furniture. It's easy to see why Napier is a fan of the raw wood look.
