Home storage solutions can be just as decorative as they are functional. Rather than opting for the typical boring storage containers, why not make your own alternative to add some personality to your home? One smart way to do this is by transforming an old or thrifted vintage doily into a unique storage bowl to hold small items that do not have an assigned storage spot. To create this DIY décor, wrap a doily around the bottom of a small bowl so that it takes the proper shape, and cover it in a fabric stiffener such as Mod Podge Stiffy. This is the perfect way to repurpose old or vintage doilies you have at home.
After the doily dries completely, pull it off. It should have hardened into the shape of a bowl that you can then use for storage. The dainty doily bowl would look stunning on a vanity or dresser. Just avoid placing anything too heavy or large inside to avoid breaking it. If you love the look of the upcycled doily bowl and have heavier items that you need to store, consider sliding it onto the back of a glass bowl for additional durability and structure. You can then place your items inside of the glass bowl. This allows you to enjoy the charm of the doily without having to worry about it breaking or bending out of shape.
How to create a storage bowl using a doily
If you do not already have a few spare doilies on hand, consider taking a trip to a local vintage home décor shop or a thrift store to search for them. You can also purchase doilies online if needed. Once you have your doily, start out by finding a bowl that is the proper size to mold it over. Cover the back of the bowl in foil or plastic wrap to protect it from the fabric stiffener you'll apply to your bowl. Next, lay a sheet of cardboard, parchment paper, or any other protective layer over the surface you're working on. Place your doily onto the back of your foil-covered bowl. Dip a paint brush in fabric stiffener and use it to coat your doily until it is saturated with the liquid.
Allow the doily to dry overnight, and then remove it in the morning. You can then use your new elegant bowl to keep small items organized without hogging space. Feel free to further customize this DIY by painting your doily before turning it into a bowl. To do this, start out by dipping it into water and ringing it out to make it easier for the paint to saturate the fabric. Next, dilute some acrylic paint in a color of your choice with a bit of water. Dip a paint brush into the mixture and use it to paint your doily on both sides. After it dries completely, you can turn it into a DIY decorative storage bowl or basket by following the aforementioned steps.
