Transform Ordinary Carrots Into A Stunning Floral Easter Centerpiece

It's a good bet that you've never looked at a pile of carrots and thought to yourself, "Yeah β€” those would make a great vase for an Easter arrangement." However, with this DIY, you'll create a vegetable-based floral arrangement using raw carrots morphed into a bundle of living vases. Each of these gives a nod to many of the decorative motifs of Easter: bunnies (or rather the carrots they love) and flowers, lots and lots of springtime flowers. Despite substituting carrots for a traditional vase, the arrangement doesn't do away with a glass vase altogether. Something needs to stand those carrots up on their ends after all. In this case, the glass vase becomes the container that houses all those carrots, giving the orange veggies a glass house to root in, in a manner of speaking.

As for the number of carrots required to pull this DIY project off, up to a dozen or more are needed to create the carrot vases. The actual number of carrots will depend on how many flowers you fill the bouquet with. Once the carrots are prepped, assorted flowers of the Easter persuasion β€“ lilies, tulips, daffodils, and possibly some baby's breath – nestle in holes the bases of the carrots. Finally, a drill and a knife, plus a turkey baster filled with water, provide the holiday miracle that allows the blossoms to seemingly bloom out of the base of the Easter Bunny's favorite snack. In short, it's a simple Easter DIY that can elevate the decor in any room of your home.

Creating vases from raw carrots

In this DIY, the flowers, which are inserted into the bases of the carrots, replace their green, leafy tops. Once the tops are removed, a quick slice with a knife flattens the base of each carrot to making it easier to drill. The drilling part of this DIY looks as wonky as it sounds, but it does work for this purpose. It carves out a hole in the base of the carrot that's deep enough for the stem of a flower to fit into.

As for the carrots themselves, let's have a word here about what ones to choose. Going with large carrots with fat bases gives you more room to work with as you drill into each carrot. Smaller carrots (and smaller drill bits) could be used for florals, like baby's breath, that have very thin stems. However, many flowers, like calla lilies, boast thicker stems. Those need a thicker carrot "vase" to sit in. So, if you're able to purchase the carrots individually in the store, your DIY will be all the better for it. Before the carrots become living planter boxes, give them a good scrub and clean off any hairy roots without taking away the rough texture of the skin. The texture makes the vase look more interesting. Now, the cleaned veggies are ready to be placed into a glass vase, root-side down. Then, add a little water into the hole of each carrot before placing the flower's stem into them.

Taking this carroty craft to the next level

While Bugs Bunny may lean toward ripe orange carrots, you don't have to as you're figuring out how to style a vase that taps into the motifs of food-core. This is already an interesting project, one that would be made all the more interesting if you used heirloom rainbow carrots to plant your flowers in. Instead of orange only, you get a multicolor vegetable rainbow when you fill carrots with hues of purple, dark blue, yellow, and sometimes pink, with your Easter blooms.

If you leave the floral craft as is, the carrots sit in a loose bunch at the bottom of the vase. Tying a loose bow around the bunch before you insert the carrots into the vase brings additional fanciness to the arrangement. Ribbons shaped like leaves, like the David Accessories Olive Leaves Ribbon, would be a pretty touch. Though, any kind of soft ribbon would work well. Lastly, you can add another touch of Easter to your arrangement by placing its glass container onto a flat tray that you've fill with decorative paper straw. Once the glass vase is positioned in the middle of the tray, place brightly-colored Easter eggs all around the vase to create a beautiful dining table centerpiece.
