A paint sprayer can be the ideal tool for the rapid painting or staining of walls, doors, fences, decking, and numerous other DIY projects and craft items. However, the investment required may put some people off. We tried the cheapest paint sprayer at The Home Depot, and although it retailed at around seventy bucks (which is not particularly expensive), you also need an air compressor to work with it. So, the cost soon adds up. The spray gun in question is also what might be considered a pro model, so there can be a bit of a learning curve when figuring out how to use it.
For the vast majority of spray painting tasks, a portable battery-powered HVLP (high volume low pressure) paint sprayer is an affordable alternative. There's no cord or air hose to get tangled up with, and many are compatible with DeWalt batteries. So, if you already own that brand's power tools, you can save even more. However, there can be considerable differences in the quality, performance, and price of these paint sprayers. To understand what you're getting for your money, it's a good idea to compare the specifications and check out customer feedback. We took a closer look at popular models from Mellif, DtzeTech, Heintech, and Trexeen.
What to look for in an affordable paint sprayer
Before we look at actual tools, let's consider the key features. All HVLP spray guns use a lot of air but not a lot of material, so you can get a good, even spray with very little waste. Each sprayer comes with three or four different nozzles (also called tips) that regulate flow. For example, you usually need a larger nozzle for thicker paint. Choose brass nozzles over plastic for increased durability. These tools also have a flow adjustment knob on the trigger and a choice of spray patterns.
These features combine to give great versatility in terms of the materials you can spray and the level of accuracy possible, so you can get the perfect finish every time when using a spray gun. Recommended setups are usually provided by the manufacturer. Kits should also include a cleaning brush, a viscosity cup to check paint thickness, and some paint filters.
Paint containers (usually called cups) don't vary much. Using one that has a larger capacity means you can spray longer between refills. However, this also means that the tool is heavier when full. If you intend to spray large areas, you might want to check the maximum flow rate, which is given in milliliters per minute (ml/min). You'll also find some manufacturers that give a clearer indication of exactly which DeWalt batteries are compatible, particularly when it comes to the older 18V models, which many people may still own.
Affordable paint sprayers: Mellif and DtezTech
Mellif paint sprayers are widely available and, judging by customer feedback, are very popular. They are also among the most affordable. The Mellif Brushless HVLP Paint Sprayer is currently just $19.99 at Amazon. It comes with four nozzles and all the expected accessories. The paint cup has a 1,200 ml (2.54 pint) capacity and a maximum flow rate of 1,200 ml/min. Comments like, "For the price, I didn't expect it to work as well as it did," are typical of the majority. Not everyone was happy, though, with some complaining it spits and can spoil the finish. However, proper setup is vital, and you can avoid a clogged paint sprayer with one easy step. What appears to be exactly the same gun is available elsewhere at a noticeably higher price, so it's worth shopping around.
The DtezTech Paint Sprayer for DeWalt 20V Batteries follows the usual formula of four nozzles and three spray patterns. The container is a little smaller at 1,000 ml (2 pints), but the flow rate is impressive at 1,600 ml/min. It comes with a price tag of $59.95, underlining what good value the Mellif offers. Despite the higher price, it has a lot of fans, many of whom think it is an excellent tool and still good value. A couple of people thought it deceptive in that there was no battery included, although that is stated in the description.
Affordable paint sprayers: Heinpro and Trexeen
The Heinpro Cordless Paint Sprayer costs $59.99 but, along with the expected set of tips and spray patterns, includes 50 filters and two useful rolls of masking film. There's a 1,200 ml cup and a 1,400 ml/min maximum flow rate. Yet again, many customers found it great value and, as we've heard from people who bought other models, it "exceeded expectations." Some said it dripped paint or leaked, but they are in the minority.
The most expensive Dewalt-compatible paint sprayer we looked at is the Trexeen Cordless Paint Sprayer, priced at $69.99. It includes work gloves and a pair of goggles, but otherwise is similar to other tools, with four nozzles and a 1,200 ml cup. A maximum flow rate is not provided. The majority of buyers were happy with their purchase, with many noting it was both easy to use and easy to clean. The few complaints centered on it draining batteries too quickly, although it's impossible to know the condition of the batteries in question.
While all of these affordable paint sprayers are compatible with DeWalt batteries, it's important to note that none include either battery or charger in the price. If you own other power tools, it's worth checking what's available since similar models are compatible with Makita, Milwaukee, and Ryobi batteries. Finally, don't forget safety. Always wear a mask and goggles whenever spraying either paint or stain.
