Tape A Spoon To Your Watering Can To Completely Upgrade Your Garden Chores

When using a simple watering can to water plants in the garden, you may be frustrated by the water pouring in one spot instead of spreading evenly. A simple solution for this is to buy a brand new watering can with a showerhead-style spout, like this Nerub Watering Can. Yet — why not just engineer a solution at home to upgrade your watering can with some tape and a simple spoon? This is an incredibly simple DIY that can make your watering chores much more efficient and enjoyable.

Basic watering cans with simple narrow spouts are great for watering indoor plants in pots where a precise stream of water is best. Outside in the garden, they're not ideal. With much of the water falling in one spot, you risk overwatering some roots while missing others. It also means more back-and-forths to refill the watering can.

The hack is a great solution if you didn't consider spout shape when shopping for your watering can. Simply attach a spoon to the end of the watering can's neck so that the water doesn't flow all in the same spot. Instead, the water stream will bounce back on the spoon and splash across the ground. It's so simple that you don't even need to make long-term changes to your watering can. You can do this hack one day and remove it the next if you need to use your watering can indoors or for precise spot watering.

How to attach a spoon to your watering can

Tiktoker jeffandlaurenshow shows just how easy this hack is. Grab a simple spoon, some tape, and your watering can. Secure the spoon handle along the neck of the watering can using tape. The hollow part of the spoon should sit right below the spout of the watering can so that when water comes out, it first reaches the spoon and bounces back.

Which tape to use depends on whether this hack is a one-time thing or a longer-term solution for you. If you need to cover lots of ground or are watering some seedlings, but need to reuse the same watering can for precise watering afterward, use tape that you can easily remove, like painter's tape. This type of tape is perfect for temporary solutions because it's designed to come off without leaving too much residue behind. If you'd like to more permanently convert your simple watering can into a showerhead-style watering system, opt for long-wear adhesive like duct tape. No matter which one you use, you can of course cut it off if needed. Simply use some vinegar to remove the sticky residue afterward.

For bigger watering cans where a simple spoon might not be able to effectively redirect the water stream, consider a larger serving spoon. For example, these Cornucopia Brands X-Large Stainless Steel Serving Spoons could be a good fit for a watering can with a wide and straight neck. If the neck of the watering can is curved, you might need a spoon with a shorter handle. Keep in mind that the shorter the spoon handle, the less sturdy your DIY will be.
