Stunning floating shelves can be one of the most stylish ways to get a little extra storage and display in any room. While retailers are full of shelving options for your home, you may be overlooking some readily available materials you can procure second-hand that make great small floating shelves with a few modifications. Wooden boxes, with the addition of some interior shelves and hanging hardware, can easily become small wall-mounted units that are perfect for holding small items.
These boxes and crates come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including larger wine and fruit crates, round wooden cheese boxes, and small cigar boxes with their lids removed. You could also use slender wooden drawers harvested from a desk or vanity table. Or consider modifying budget-friendly Dollar Tree wood crates. Use these fun shelves to transform your space wherever you need a bit of conveniently mounted storage, like in a bathroom to hold extra hand towels or as a cute spice rack in your kitchen.
Turning thrifted wood boxes into shelves
To turn these wood containers into a shelving unit, all you need are some wood pieces that are long and wide enough to fit snugly inside the box made from lumber or plywood. Wood glue is great for a container that holds the wood in place by tension, but a square or rectangular box may require some nails or tiny L-brackets to keep the shelf in place. To hang it, add some Gussker D-Ring Hooks or Gussker Sawtooth Picture Hangers to the back. If your shelf or contents are heavier, make sure to place the nails directly in the studs.
Leave the wood in its original form for a rustic look or finish it with stain or paint to fit your décor perfectly. For a spin on this project, add an additional bit of wood cut down to the shape and size of your box to turn it into a box for hanging plants or greenery. Slide the piece into place along the front edge and add some wood glue to hold it. The cavity inside will form a box for your planter.
