If you love the look of homey, rustic, cottage-core kitchens, then you need to try hanging herbs for the ultimate practical decor piece. Not only is this practice great for storing fresh garden herbs so they'll last longer, but you'll also get to enjoy the look of your bundled herbs before you jar them up. Wondering how to hang your dried herb bundles yourself without compromising on storage space? It's a lot easier than you might think.

TikTok user @honeys.mama showed her followers exactly how she creates a DIY herb hanging rack for her home, and we have to admit that we're inspired. She nails and ties together square wooden dowels in a grid pattern, attaches cup hooks across each dowel, and hangs the whole contraption from her ceiling, ready for adding bundles of tied herbs. The best part? This space-saving herb storage rack is easy to adapt to your own space, too.

Your kitchen might not even need a full DIY project if it already has a rail for hanging pots and pans. Just grab a double-sided metal hook that can hang off the rail and attach a tied bundle of herbs to the other end. Herbs look beautiful when hung up next to pots, spatulas, and oven mitts, and they add a little bit of colorful charm to racks of monochrome metal pans.

Your herbs might also benefit from being hung high above the kitchen with lots of display room. If you don't have room for a full grid of herbs, try installing single rows of square or rounded dowels on your ceiling instead. Tension rods are a great renter-friendly pick if you have the space to suspend them, or you can use studs and nails to securely attach the dowels to a drywall ceiling. Add screw-in hooks — like these Hardware Essentials Cup Hooks from Amazon — evenly spaced across each dowel for hanging your herbs.

If you prefer to lay your herbs flat to dry out, don't give up on ceiling herb storage just yet. You can also suspend a net with a small grid from your ceiling. To create tension that will create a flat space for your herbs to rest on top of, secure the net to a large wooden frame. Then, tie your herbs to hang from each grid or lay them down on top of the net.

Ways to style your herb drying rack

Suspending thick dried sticks or reclaimed wood from your ceiling is another organic way of displaying your favorite herbs. For the most stability, ensuring your herb display rack doesn't move around when touched, you should either secure it to your ceiling using multiple hooks or hang it on a wall, where it can receive support. If you want to skip the cup hooks altogether, you can try sourcing driftwood, like this Manzanita Driftwood, for your dried herb display; these types of wood will allow you to tie your herbs directly onto the branches. These are more for looks and a little less practical than a full set of hanging hooks, since they are more delicate and won't have room for as many herbs.

For the ultimate rustic appeal, match the string you tie your herbs with to the rest of your display. Brown jute twine, such as this Natural Jute Garden Twine, is gentle on the stems of dried herbs and matches dark wood or organic aesthetics with ease. A white or cream-colored twine can bring more of a charming farmhouse feel to your herb display, while using bright colors is a fun way to add an extra pop of color to fun floral herb bunches. Just be sure to hang them in a space that is as dark and cool as possible for long-lasting dried herbs.
