The Hair Dryer Hack That Makes Drying A Puffy Jacket So Much Easier

The insulation in those puffy jackets that keep you warm during winter often becomes jumbled during a cycle through a washer and dryer. You may then try (and fail) to evenly redistribute the material within the jacket. There's a simple hack you can use to avoid this time-consuming task. The next time you wash a puffer jacket, rather than tossing it into your dryer, grab a hair dryer and a rolling pin. This is a great alternative to simply throwing the jacket into a dryer, which typically causes the insulation inside to clump up.

Lay the jacket down on a flat surface and use the hair dryer to blow air into the jacket through its various openings. Hit the entirety of the jacket with the rolling pin while it's inflated with air. This will dry the jacket while the rolling pin spreads the insulation out evenly. When you're done, it should be nice and fluffy.

Before you give this hack a try, read your jacket's care label. You'll need to make sure that the heat setting you select on your hair dryer will not damage the material the outerwear item is made of. Opt for low heat if the label states the jacket needs to be dried on low heat, and so on.

Use a hair dryer and a rolling pin to fluff your jacket

There are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to try out this creative laundry hack. To evenly distribute the insulation material inside your jacket, make sure to work the rolling pin from side to side and top to bottom. Additionally, place heavy items on the outer edges of your jacket so that the air pressure from the hair dryer does not cause it to blow out of place. Finally, ensure you do not use a dryer heat setting so high that it damages the fabric.

If you take a look at the comments section of the Instagram video posted by @vita_momhack, you'll see that many users shared that they prefer to place a few tennis balls in the dryer with the jacket to get it fluffy. You might also prefer to use this alternative if you already have the necessary materials on hand. But go for wool dryer balls instead of tennis balls since they may leave residue on your jacket that could damage your laundry and dryer.

To use the wool dryer ball method for a puffy down jacket, place two wool dryer balls inside your dryer along with the jacket. Set the machine to an air fluff cycle on a low temperature, and it should come out nice and fluffy. To use this method on a puffy jacket filled with synthetic insulation, tumble dry it on low with the dryer balls inside the machine.
