Create A Unique Spring Wreath Using Repurposed Toilet Paper Rolls

With spring right around the corner, it is a great time to plan your decorations for the new season. There are so many simple ways to refresh your home for spring that it may be difficult to choose where to start. However, with some planning, this DIY could be a great addition to your spring décor. Start by collecting toilet paper rolls to repurpose to create a unique spring wreath.

Although using toilet paper rolls for a project may remind you of an elementary school craft, this DIY will look far from childish when it's complete. To begin, you will need cardboard rolls. Standard toilet paper rolls' cores have a diameter of one-and-a-half to two inches. However, not all rolls' cardboard cores are made the same. In order for this project to look neat and uniform, you will want to use the same type of cardboard core, or take a few extra minutes to measure the diameter of the cardboard tube before beginning.

While collecting paper rolls is a great way to repurpose something that otherwise would go to waste, it is not the only way to find these cores. Many craft stores sell cardboard tubes that could work well for this project. However, before purchasing, take a moment to check the width of the outer-edge of the tube, as some craft rolls can be made with a thicker rim, which could make it more difficult to cut and shape rolls. Taking time to measure before beginning could save you a lot of frustration down the road.

To begin, take a roll and smoosh it so that the cardboard is flat. Then, cut the roll into equal sized strips so that you end up with small round pieces. It's important that the rolls are cut to the same size, otherwise the wreath will have an uneven look. Cut the roll in half, and cut each half in half again, or, to be more precise, measure out each strip. The number of rolls you need depends on what size wreath you want.

Next, glue the outer edge of two rounds together with a hot glue gun. Add another round to the side of one of the outer rounds, eventually creating an accordion-style chain. Then, grab a round object that is approximately the circumference of your desired wreath, and wrap your chain around the outer edge of the project. This will help you determine if you need to add more rounds. Once you are happy, glue the chain together to create the wreath.

To create some flowers, cut a full roll, so that it lays flat like a piece of paper. Then, cut the paper longways into two thin strips and two thicker strips. Create a fringe on the thicker strip by snipping along it. Roll the smaller piece onto itself to make the center of the flower, wrap the second small piece around that one, and finally wrap the fringed piece around the outside. Use glue throughout to secure the piece. Finally, fan out the fringe to create the flower, and glue multiple of these flowers around the wreath to create a floral design.

There are many ways to embellish this DIY. The cardboard-colored wreath could look great as is in a variety of different home décor styles, but, if you want to add a pop of color to the look, it wouldn't be too complicated. For a colorful look, paint the cardboard tubes before you glue them together. Cutting the tubes first will help you ensure that you properly coat the entire surface and help the work dry in the ideal shape. However, if you glue it together before painting, it can be more difficult to coat. When choosing a paint, you can either use a spray paint or acrylic; to keep the project budget-friendly, try using something that you already have on hand. If you decide to use the former, put your can of spray paint in hot water before painting and thank us later.

Of course, this isn't the only way to make the project your own. Try creating a few different wreath sizes, which could be hung separately for a statement piece, or you could layer them on top of each other for one unique wreath.
