How To Turn Lemons Into Gorgeous Kitchen Decor

Every design fiend knows that adding a pop of color to a room is a tried and true way to bring in vibrance, character, and seasonal aesthetics. Pops of color offer dimension to an otherwise uniform room by giving something out of the ordinary that draws in the eyes. In the rest of the house, you can easily opt for things like framed artwork or colorful throw blankets to achieve this look in a living room or bedroom, but the kitchen color pops can be even more unique. To get a springtime look and savvily add yellow to your home decor, you can use real lemons for a gorgeous kitchen centerpiece — they might even offer a clean scent to your space, too.

All you need for this simple DIY is around two dozen lemons, twelve thin wooden dowels (such as these HOPELF 14-inch Bamboo Skewer Sticks), and a large decorative bowl to place them in. Simply pierce the lemons onto long wooden skewers so that one lemon is on each end of the stick — the dowel should go through the top of the lemon so that it easily sits sideways. Then, stack the skewers to create a circle of lemons. The more you add, the more hidden the wooden sticks will be, so you end up with a piece that looks like a uniform, geometrically appealing dome of fresh fruit. Toward the end, top the dome off with singular lemons on their own single skewer.

How to make this lemon centerpiece your own

One major downside to this hack is that lemons will only last about two weeks — and if the skewer pierces your lemons too much, that decreases their lifespan. Plus, you might struggle to find a culinary way to use the dozens of lemons once you're done with the centerpiece, which could add extra stress. If you want this decor to last longer and have no use for so many lemons, don't fret: you can opt for faux lemons instead. You can get a 30-pack of Winlyn lifelike lemons for $16.99 on Amazon, and–for a one-time purchase–they are likely cheaper than the real ones from a grocery store. Just be sure to get ones that are made of styrofoam or another pierce-able material. If you're missing the fresh, lemony scent, you can make an all-natural room freshener with lemon essential oil and/or lemon peels, vodka, and water to spray onto the area.

Once you've built your lemon foundation, feel free to add your own touches. Instagram creator @hannahann used faux leaves to top off her own lemon decor sculpture, which is a great way to add some greenery and complete the look of the kitchen centerpiece. Otherwise, you could also add in other fruits like faux or real limes to blend in another color or place faux birds around the lemons to enhance the natural vibes. You can also personalize this craft by changing up the display bowl to match or contrast the lemon yellow.
