Turn Old Dresser Drawers Into The Most Stylish Table With Extra Storage

Knowing what to do with an old dresser can be difficult. These bulky furniture pieces can be hard to transport, making disposal or reselling an inconvenient chore that gets put off. Instead letting your old dresser collect dust or getting rid of it altogether, take the opportunity to create something new. On TikTok, @thriftykenzie shares a clever way to repurpose old dresser drawers by turning them into a two-tier display stand for her business. This DIY requires some elbow grease, but once finished can provide versatile open storage in so many rooms around the house.

To start, choose two drawers from your dresser. Remove the hardware, and sand the surfaces to remove any existing paint or surface imperfections. If you don't have an electric sander for wood, you will have to sand manually. If you have the time and endurance, you can make it work. But, if you want to invest in an electric sander for this project and DIYs to come, consider an orbital sander for the most versatility.

Next, you'll need four planks of 1x3-inch plywood, cut to size for the desired height of your stand. If you don't have wood cutting capabilities at home, you can always have lumber cut at a home improvement store like Lowes. From there, Kenzie demonstrates how she measures and marks where the drawers will sit along the planks and pre-drills pilot holes so the plywood doesn't split. Then comes assembly and the finishing touches.

Assembling and finishing your drawer DIY

To put everything together, you'll want to use an electric screwdriver and screws that are made to be used with wood. Be sure to choose the right screw size by ensuring the screws are long enough to go through the plywood and into the side of the drawers (just not all the way through). Once the legs of the stand are secure, it's time to add finishing touches.

Kenzie uses black paint in the original DIY, a simple choice that complements the decorative hardware her drawers had to begin with. But, you can really choose whatever color you like here, so opt for something that complements the room where you want to keep it. All that's left to do is reinstall your hardware.

The best thing about this piece is how it can be used well in almost any space. In the kitchen, use it as a spacious spice rack with room for vinegar and oil bottles. In the dining room, you could easily use the top shelf as a bar cart with extra space for wine and cocktail glasses at the bottom. In living rooms and bedrooms, it could be a bookshelf as easily as it could be a space for throw blankets and guest linens. No matter where you put this storage table, you are sure to find it useful.
