The Wall Trend That Will Add Dimension And Style To Your Rooms

Most homes built today are filled with blank walls and lack architectural details like paneling, crown molding, and millwork found in historic buildings. But these details are in high demand, causing many people to look for inexpensive and easy ways to add visual interest to boring walls. Adding decorative trim to these architectural details takes the look up a notch, adding a custom, high-end feel to any room.

A decorative trim that has recently grown in popularity is bobbin trim. Bobbin is a beaded wood trim made of half rounds that resembles a string of pearls. It's a delicate and versatile trim that can add detail to large walls, small picture frames, and everything in between. Although it has been around for centuries, it works in a variety of modern trends including farmhouse, cottagecore decor, grandmillenial, and more. You can leave it natural for a Scandinavian feel or do maximalist decor with a gold or brightly-colored paint. Adding bobbin trim to your walls is an easy DIY that doesn't require heavy tools. All you need is some trim, strong shears such as the TOWOT Angle Miter Shears, wood/construction adhesive, and paint (if using).

How (and where) to add bobbin trim to walls

The hardest part of this project is finding the bobbin trim. At the time of writing, it wasn't available on Amazon or popular home improvement stores, but you can find it on Etsy in various sizes and price points. The trim in the video was also purchased from NaturTrend. Once you have your trim, measure the amount you need, then cut to fit using miter shears. To adhere bobbin trim to walls, use a good construction adhesive like Loctite Power Grab or a nail gun if you want to add extra support. Once the glue is dry, you can paint your trim to match the wall — or paint it before installing if you want it to be a different color.

If you love the look of bobbin trim inside wall panels but don't yet have this feature on your walls, you can get Ekena Millwork Classic Wainscot Wall Panels on Amazon for about $20 a piece. This trim can also be added to crown molding, door frames, window frames, chair rails — really any architectural detail with straight lines. A popular use of bobbin trim is to add softness to rectangular furniture and cabinetry but is also great for small craft projects like picture frames and mirrors.
