Turn One Unused Bed Pillow Into Two Accent Pillows With This DIY
An old bed pillow on it's own doesn't exactly scream "glamorous home decor." But, if you have one to hand, a little creativity and some basic sewing skills can help you transform this pillow into not just one, but two stylish accent pillows. As crafty TikToker @caitconquers shows us in a video, it's surprisingly easy to take an old or inexpensive bed pillow and turn it into two chic accent pillows that are perfect for your couch, bed, or cozy reading nook.
The video saw her start by grabbing a cheap, basic pillow, laying it flat, and using scissors to cut it in half widthwise. She noted that you may struggle with cutting through the middle of the pillow but that you don't need to worry too much about how evenly you're cutting it. Once the pillow was in half, she gave the stuffing a little push down on each side to redistribute it; we want each new pillow to contain an even amount of stuffing. A little variance could be nice, but we don't want two massively different sizes here, especially if you're going for a twin pillow look. Then, she pinned down the open edges to stop the filling from spilling out before stitching each end shut using a simple straight stitch on a sewing machine. If you don't have a sewing machine, your city might have a power tool library where you can rent one. Alternatively, hand-stitching the pillows closed works too.
You can personalize the pillows
Instead of blowing your budget on a load of fancy accent pillows (can someone explain why they are so expensive?), this crafty trick lets you update an old item with as much personalization as you want. So, not only will this trick save you some money, it will also breathe new life into something you'd have just left in the back of your linen closet. Plus, saving a bit of money on the pillows itself leaves you with more to spend on choosing the perfect fabric covers for your space's aesthetic. (When making your own accent pillows you are not limited to whatever designs are available in store.) Choosing the right throw pillow for your home's decor takes a bit of consideration, but it makes all the difference.
Once you've sewn the pillows shut, simply slide them into pillow covers that fit the new, smaller size or get creative with ways to turn any fabric into a stylish pillowcase. Eye-catching accent pillows are a great way to refresh a room, adding a pop of color and texture without doing much work. What's more, matching or similarly themed accent pillows can make a living space feel more coherent.
Whether you're going for trendy colorful patterns, timeless neutral shades, or even fun seasonal designs you can swap out throughout the year, this DIY hack makes it possible to switch up your home decor without breaking the bank. Plus, when your guests admire your stylish new pillows, you get to proudly say, "Thanks, I made them myself!"
