What Is The Helpful Heroes App (And How It Could Change The Way You Do Home Repairs)
It can be extremely frustrating to have dozens of home repair projects on your to-do list when you lack the time or skill to complete them. Whether neglecting to clean your gutters has left them full of slimy crud, or that flat-packed furniture you got for Christmas still hasn't been assembled, one "Shark Tank" entrepreneur built an app that may be able to help. Although NextDoor's Nirav Tolia and businessman Marc Cuban both passed on Dave Heimbuch's original pitch, two other Sharks saw potential in the mobile app that connects off-duty firefighters with homeowners who need help around the house. Robert Herjavec and Lori Greiner invested and helped rebrand the app, striking a deal with Heimbuch which propelled his home improvement service technology to over $1 million in revenue and extend its reach nationwide. After downloading the Helpful Heroes app, it takes only a few minutes to share details about home repair projects with firefighters and EMTs in your area who can help.
Although some home improvement projects are better left to the professionals, like renovating a bathroom or major structural work, others can be accomplished with just a little extra help. The Helpful Heros app allows you to pick from several basic service categories. Each one, from furniture moving to wall mounting a TV, displays an expected price range. Even if you decide not to use a hero to complete the service, this feature can be very helpful while trying to determine a reasonable budget for basic home repairs in your area.
How it works
After downloading Helpful Heroes from the App Store or Google Play, setting up a free account, and selecting your project type, you'll start by typing your address to make sure there is a firefighter or EMT in your area. (We found heroes in multiple locations on the East Coast who were available for a variety of project types.) You'll then be asked to share project details, including a basic title, description, and your desired service date. There is also an option to upload pictures of your potential project or job site. Once you submit the details, you'll be presented with a project estimate. If you accept the terms, you'll be prompted to enter credit card details. Your project will then be posted on the Helpful Heroes Pro app, where firefighters can review and connect with you about your project. You are charged for their services after your project is completed.
The app is still pretty new and reviewers opinions are divided. Some think it's a lifesaver while others find it hard to use and say there aren't enough jobs or firefighters available in their area. Still, the Sharks saw potential in this idea because it can alleviate some of the hassles involved with hiring a handyperson. Helpful Heroes relies on the thorough vetting and background checks conducted on firefighters and EMTs by their local stations to ensure the trustworthiness of their available service providers. The company also provides insurance, which keeps you covered in the event of any mishaps.
