Transform A Ceiling On A Budget Using Materials You Can Find At Walmart

Ceilings have always been the wallflower of home design: quiet, reliable, and kind of boring. But if you're into interior design, you've probably noticed the trend of people ditching plain white overheads and giving their ceilings a serious glow-up. They're adding bold colors or playful patterns to their ceilings to add a bit of personality and dimension to their space. If you'd like to join them and create something unexpected from floor to ceiling, this faux wood DIY hack from YouTube might be the answer. It consists of sticking faux wood slats to your ceiling and wall to create stylish and textured stripes.

What's so great about this hack is that it's budget-friendly and doesn't require custom-made wood slats. You can do it all with a quick trip to Walmart and the right tools. To do this, you'll need faux wood Venetian blinds from Walmart (around $33, depending on the size). You'll also need glue to ensure they won't come crashing down, like an instant grab construction adhesive sold at Walmart. If you're a beginner DIYer, note that this will require some skills and tools. You'll need a ladder, which won't come cheap. If you don't have one already, you can rent one from a home hardware store. You'll also need tons of glue, which is not exactly renter-friendly. So, if you're diving into this project, just know it leans more on the permanent side and might not be your landlord's favorite makeover.

Creating accent stripes on your wall and ceiling

To pull this off, start by cutting the strings on the blinds to free the faux wood planks. The goal is to arrange these slats on the ceiling in a pattern using construction adhesive. To do this, apply small dabs of glue along the back of a slat, press it firmly against the ceiling until the adhesive sets, and repeat with the other slats. It can be tricky working overhead, so ensure you have a ladder and a plan.

When designing, you have options. You can replicate the video by spacing each slat about an inch apart. To do this, use a guide, such as a ruler, to make sure the planks are all equally spaced out and parallel, and throw in some LED light strips in between slats for a modern effect. If you prefer a rustic wooden look or want to avoid spacing concerns, you can place the slats directly next to each other. You can also buy these Walmart blinds in white to alternate colors and create some wider stripes.

These blinds are soft enough to cut with scissors, so you can customize their shape easily. Trim them at an angle if you prefer the slats to sit diagonally rather than perpendicularly to the wall. Or, cut them to different lengths to create unique designs, such as triangles, waves, or even a rainbow pattern.
