How To DIY A Spring Flower Box On A Dollar Tree Budget

Displaying cut flowers around the house is a simple way to refresh your home for spring. However, if you'd rather not spend time maintaining them or money on fresh blooms every few days, you might want to go the faux route. But just because you're using fake flowers to bring the season's warmth and optimism to your interiors, doesn't mean the arrangement can't be aesthetically pleasing. Just use a beautiful spring flower box to get your money's worth. On a tight budget? DIY one using common Dollar Tree items, including a wood crate and bamboo cutting board.

Since a beautiful container is necessary to make your artificial flowers look real (or at least give the impression), using an old, battered vase or container won't do. The good news is you just need to put your DIY skills to use and buy a Crafter's Square Rectangular Wooden Crate and a cutting board on your next trip to the local Dollar Tree. You'll also need one to two blocks of floral foam and a few faux flowers and bushes to fill out the box. To decorate it, you can use half-cut wooden beads, such as ZQYYQZ's 300-piece pack of 12-millimeter balls. You can pick balls that are smaller or larger, depending on your preference. Alternatively, use scrap paper to hide the origins of your small planter box.

Steps to DIY a spring flower box using Dollar Tree supplies

Once you have the main supplies for your spring flower box, gather the tools you'll need to craft this project. You'll mainly need a tube of wood glue (or, use your hot glue gun), a paintbrush, and some acrylic paint. After you have everything, adhere the crate to the cutting board such that the former's bottom is flush with the latter's edge. This will ensure that your box isn't wobbly when placed on a flat surface. That's it. Your spring flower box is ready! Now, decorate it with wooden beads and paint it in a shade of your preference (ensure it doesn't clash with the flowers you plan on putting inside). You can even paint the crate and the board in complementary shades for a fun look.

In case you want to add your unique spin to the flower box, get a marker to draw different designs on the crate or board and color it after based on the art. Alternatively, use a pretty scrap paper to cover the box and do away with the hassle of painting. That being said, you'll have to be patient while applying the paper since a crooked fit will ruin the high-end aesthetic you're going for. Vinyl decals, glitter glue, and peel-and-stick wallpaper are a few other things you can use to customize your box.

Modifications to the spring flower box and arranging the blooms

In case you don't find a cutting board at Dollar Tree and don't have an old one at home, you don't have to let go of the idea or buy another for a premium. You can still DIY a spring flower box on a Dollar Tree budget; simply swap the board with Crafter's Square Natural Craft Sticks. Paint the crate and sticks in your preferred tone. Then, keeping one stick as the base, glue a few on either side of it at an angle (think of an awning over a stand). Place floral foam in the crate and push two wooden skewers inside (if possible, delay this step until you arrange the flowers in the crate). Adhere your craft stick awning to the skewers and your flower box will be ready. Embellish it further with decorative beads and stones if you want.

Once you have the box, it's time to start arranging the blooms. Whether you're going with the original idea or the craft sticks one, glue some floral foam to the crate's inside. This will give your faux blooms some height and keep them in place. Now, follow Joanna Gaines' top tips for arranging artificial flowers and get good-quality miniature blooms. Arrange your favorite piece in the center of the foam and use other flowers and bushes to flank it. Layer the box with greenery and foliage to ensure there are no bald spots. Finally, fluff the arrangement after you're satisfied, and place your box in a prime location.
