Tired Of The Boucle Furniture Trend? Try These Timeless Alternatives Instead
To boucle or not to boucle — that is the question. Boucle is a woven fabric that has textured look and cozy, plush feel. It can be used in a variety of different clothing and home designs, including furniture. You can, of course, find this furniture design online or at a furniture store, or you could even create an inexpensive DIY boucle chair using one clever pool noodle hack. However, is the boucle furniture trend going out of style? House Digest spoke exclusively with Julie Jones, Certified Interior Designer & Founder of Julie Jones Designs, to learn more about this trend and what some other timeless alternatives are.
Jones shared that she does believe that the boucle furniture trend is on its way out. "I believe boucle became an attractive trend because it can bring another texture and layer to a space," Jones said. "Longevity is not only the problem with trends, but with boucle especially it is not a longevity type of fabric. It doesn't wear well with time, and with heavy use it becomes worn down." While choosing a style that you love is always more important that following current trends, there are always other factors to consider when shopping. Since furniture is often well-used, keeping you boucle furniture looking fresh may be a challenge. So, while you may love the aesthetic, if you are planning on using the boucle furniture in a frequently used area of your home, it may not be the best choice.
Instead of boucle, consider these alternatives
Although boucle may be going out of style and may not be the best choice for furniture, that doesn't mean you can't still have the benefits of this furniture trend in your home. As interior designer Julie Jones explained in House Digest's exclusive interview, there are many textiles to add texture to your space. Jones suggests that if you are looking for an alternative for boucle, you can try velvet, chenille, tweed, or linen instead.
"These are a little more timeless options in my opinion that can add that cozy texture you may be looking for," Jones explained. "More textures bring more layers to a space and therefore more of a warm and cozy aesthetic." While adding different types of fabrics is one way to add texture to your living space, it isn't the only way. These five ways to add texture to your home decor may help inspire you, especially if you are planning on redesigning your space and moving away from the boucle furniture trend.
How to make a fabric choice that will last
Choosing the right fabric for your home's furniture is important. Because shopping for furniture can lead to a pricey decision, you want to purchase something that fits your style, while also choosing something that will last. While boucle can be a great style choice for some homes, it isn't the best when it comes to longevity. During House Digest's exclusive interview with Julie Jones, she shared how to find a furniture material that is timeless.
"Timeless is a tricky word, but in general it's something that has stood the test of time," Jones explained. "The fabrics I named above have done that. I always recommend choosing a natural material where you can." However, Jones also explained that for many of her clients, she recommends a performance fabric. This type of fabric can be very important if your furniture is going to have more wear than the average piece. Performance fabric is made to last longer and usually resists stains, making it easier to clean. This can be a great fabric option if you have kids or pets. While choosing the right furniture fabric can be overwhelming at first, having a background knowledge of what to look for can help you make the best decision for you and your needs.
