Give Basic Doorknobs Farmhouse Flair With A Cute Floral Dollar Tree DIY
Homeowners continually find new and creative ways to jazz up their simple doors. Whether that means painting them unique colors, adding wreaths and other decor, or even removing them altogether in favor of sliding barn doors, trendy door hacks abound. However, restyling your home's doors shouldn't always mean replacing your outdated doorknobs or repainting. Save your money and avoid over-committing by crafting simple hanging baskets that slip over your doorknobs for a hint of farmhouse flair.
Typically, replacing a door with a different style can cost upward of $1,000, and even painting your existing door can ding your wallet to the tune of $200 or more. Instead of going to all that trouble and expense, you can try this hack for under $5. The required materials all come from Dollar Tree — all you need are these Tool Bench Hardware self-adhesive wall tiles, Crafter's Square jumbo natural craft sticks, and some Floral Garden artificial hanging greenery. You'll also want to get out some wire and crafting clips, and heat up your hot glue gun for this project.
To make this craft unique, shop around for different types of peel-and-stick tile – just be sure to buy ones that are thin enough to be folded into the proper shape. You can also paint or enhance the tiles with different colors that match your own home's aesthetic. Alternatively, you could opt for some thick construction paper or fabric if you don't find tiles you love. Just note that flimsier materials for the basket might mean that it looses its shape over time.
How to make your own farmhouse flair
First, cut all the way around the tile to remove the adhesive borders, then paint it. If you lightly drybrush a contrasting color over the Dollar Tree tile, it will make the accents pop. Once it's dry, flip the tile over so the design is facing down, then fold in a quarter length of the tile in on each side until they meet in the center. Glue the two pieces together to create a flat tube, then cut that long tube in half, horizontally — you now have the start of two small baskets. Seal one end of each basket with hot glue. Clip a popsicle stick on each side to hold the ends shut as the glue cools.
Next, punch a hole into each side of the basket. Loop your bendable crafting wire through those holes to create the handle, and secure it by twisting the ends of the wire back on itself. To ensure that the contents don't get in the way of the door handle's operation, you should decide what will be in the basket before making the handle to allow enough height for taller items.
Stuff each basket with filler like paper towels, other recycled paper, or faux moss so the pocket stays open, and add your decor, like faux flowers, as the final touch. Other decorative items can also live in your door hangers; consider this the best new Elf on the Shelf hangout spot during the holidays. You can even store items in each for their respective rooms in your home, like markers in a craft room or essential oils in your bathroom.
