Save Cabinet Space With A Genius Dollar Tree Hack For Extra Coffee Mug Storage
We've all collected a few too many mugs at some point. Yours might include festive holiday mugs or those souvenirs you picked up while traveling. Even the promotional mugs that you don't really like but can never seem to get rid of find room to linger. The upside? Each one tells a story. The downside? Your kitchen cabinet is now bursting at the seams. In such a case, a quick trip to Dollar Tree (or their website) and a tiny bit of DIY-ing is all you need to free up cabinet space while showing off your coffee & tea cup collection. The idea here is to build a wire coffee mug display using mostly Dollar Tree supplies.
It's inexpensive, doesn't require special skills, and the best part is it can make your kitchen more aesthetic since it doubles as décor. Consider it a stage for your favorite, quirky, display-worthy cups, if you will. To get started, you'll need: four pieces of square wood planks to create a 31-inch by 17-inch frame. Dollar Tree sells their Crafter's Wood Planks for $1.25 a piece or you can cut your own at a hardware store. Next, add three Cooking Concepts Metal Cooling Racks to the list. You'll also want to have some wood glue, an electric staple gun, a pair of D-ring wall hooks, and a handful of S-hooks on hand.
How to DIY a cooling rack coffee mug display
First, glue the ends of the wood planks together to form a rectangle. Let dry for at least ten minutes. For a sturdier build, consider using nails before adding glue for extra strength. The next step is to line the cooling racks over the wood. Staple the corners and sides every few inches. This minimizes the chances of it crashing down with your fragile collection. Once everything's nice and secure, screw the two D-ring wall hooks at the back of the frame on either side. And now it's ready to display!
The safest way to do it is to lean the coffee mug holder against the wall — the hooks will keep it from falling. However, if you want to mount it to the wall, make sure to fasten the bottom frame with nails, as well. Finish off the DIY by scattering S-hooks over the wire grid. You can even use Dollar Tree's Metal Book Rings as an alternative and spray paint them any color you like. All that's left is to place the mug display in your coffee or breakfast nook and get styling.
Note that you can also make the coffee mug organizer taller or smaller depending on how many cups you want to hang up. Just adjust the number of wired racks accordingly, and remember to add an inch (or so) to the boards so the metal parts don't jut out. Feel free to paint the wood and/or rack in eye-popping hues if you'd like to incorporate more color into your kitchen decor. We're thinking blue, pink, orange, or red for the brave.
