The Major Costco Kitchen Appliance Recall That You Should Be Aware Of
Costco is known for its bargains on bulk items, but it also offers a wide selection of kitchen appliance brands. If you are one of the many shoppers who has purchased appliances from the wholesale retailer, there is some major news you need to be aware of. On February 6, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and LG announced a recall of the LG Slide-In and Freestanding Electric Ranges with front-mounted knobs due to fire hazards. It is important to note that the range is also sold by other appliance retailers, such as Lowe's and Home Depot.
The recall was put in place because the knobs on the front of the range can be turned on when you, your pets, or your little ones accidentally come into contact with it. This hidden fire hazard has proven to be a major safety threat because the ranges have been responsible for over 28 fires, several of which resulted in reported injuries. With this in mind, it's imperative that you take this recall seriously. If you own an LG stove, check whether it is one of the models that may have been impacted. If you are able to confirm that you have a recalled appliance in your home, immediately follow the guidance provided by CPSC and LG to protect your family and your home from the potential of a devastating fire. Learn more about the steps you need to take below.
What to do if you own one of LG's Slide-In and Freestanding Electric Ranges
To determine whether you own an LG Slide-In Range or Freestanding Range involved in this recall, take note of the model and serial number of your appliance. You can then search the list of the models and serial numbers that have been recalled on the CPSC website. You can also use the search tool shared on the LG company website. Once you confirm that your appliance was involved in the recall, reach out to LG to receive a warning label. The label should be placed on the top left corner of the oven door. This warning sticker displays a reminder to use LG's Lock Out/Control Lock feature.
Enabling LG's Lock Out/Control Lock feature ensures that the knobs cannot be activated unintentionally. To make things easier, LG took to Vimeo to upload an instructional video on how to use this feature, too. Sometimes, recalls instruct consumers to return their product for a refund; however, that isn't the case here. As long as you apply your warning label and implement certain safety measures, you can continue using a recalled LG Slide-In and Freestanding Electric Range. Those measures include ensuring children and pets do not bump into the knobs, keeping the range free of any items when it's off, educating yourself on all of the product's safety features, and confirming that the knobs are set to "off" before heading to bed for the night. Keep in mind that this recall is not the reason LG is an appliance brand you should avoid buying from Costco.
