DIY A Gorgeous Kitchen Decor Piece Out Of A Repurposed Thrifted Cookie Tin

Old metal cookie tins are a common thrift store find, typically donated long after the cookies were eaten and the tin has been used for everything from sewing supplies to first aid kits. In fact, you can repurpose cookie tins into a variety of different items for your home. One ingenious idea turns a cookie tin lid into a stylish and cute hanging wall sign and hook rack for your kitchen.

This project can be easily customized to suit your kitchen aesthetic. It bears small hooks perfect for hanging everything from dish towels and aprons to stove utensils. You can even use it to hang your keys in a mudroom or entryway. All you need is a glue gun, cotton rope, jute rope, cup hooks, and other decorative accents. Great places to look for old tins include thrift stores and garage sells. You can also reuse one from your own pantry after the cookies are gone or get a pack of Hicarer 10 Pack Pure White Cookie Tins from Amazon.

Creating cookie tin wall decor

For this DIY thrift flip, begin by separating the lid from the tin (you can repurpose the bottoms as well into items like a small three-part candy dish or a wall shelf for artificial flowers). Squeeze a dollop of glue in the center of the top of the lid and place the end of a piece of rope on top. Wrap it around the center in a coil, securing it as you go with more glue. Once you have reached the edges, secure the end with the glue gun and affix some trim or ribbon around the sides for a more finished look. On the bottom, add two mini cup hooks screwed into the tin. Glue another piece of rope on both sides at the top to hang it.

To finish, use some cotton twine to spell out a fun message or add some faux florals. You can also create other designs on the surface of your lid with fun woodcut florals, pearls, or beads. This adorable project can be customized to fit your kitchen aesthetic by using different kinds and colors of rope or twine for the base. Or, instead of the rope, use a sheet of burlap along the top surrounded by lace or ribbon trim. Alternatively, paint the surface of the tin and add other botanical accents like flowers and leaves with the glue gun. You could also decoupage the surface of the tin's top for a romantic look.
