The Rare Arrowhead Plant You Can Grow Indoors For A Subtle Splash Of Color
If you're a beginner gardener and looking for a plant that's easy to care for and a dream to display in your home, you can't look past the arrowhead plant (Syngonium sp.). In fact, this is one of the easiest houseplants anyone can keep alive. What's more, one unusual cultivar that will add a subtle splash of color is Syngonium 'Milk Confetti'. This plant is quite rare and isn't always readily available at nurseries, but you should be able to find one via an online plant site. Unlike many in the Syngonium species, which have deep green leaves, this cultivar features pale, milky green foliage with some stunning variegations in shades of pink. These often show up as different-sized flecks on the foliage, with some leaves displaying more pink than others. So, each time a new leaf unfurls, you can watch with interest to see how the variegations progress as the foliage matures.
What you'll find even more interesting about this group of plants is that they're vines in their native habitat, but the stems can be trimmed back to exhibit a shrub-like appearance. The young leaves have that classic arrowhead shape, but as the plant itself matures, older leaves develop a much narrower look. 'Milk Confetti' does well in a pot with a plant pole for support or will also look amazing in a hanging container that allows the stems to cascade down if you choose to keep them long rather than trim them back.
How to care for your arrowhead plant
For the leaf variegations to be vibrant, you want to position your plant in a spot where it gets bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight because this will burn the leaves. As this plant is sensitive to the cold, you'll want to ensure a steady temperature of around 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Being a tropical native, arrowheads also prefer a fairly humid environment, so if you have a humidifier, use it to help your plant thrive. Otherwise, misting it regularly should help to give it the air moisture it needs. In fact, the arrowhead plant is one popular houseplant that takes on humidity in bathrooms without windows, as long as you can provide enough artificial light.
Make sure to put your plant into a pot with holes in the base and use a quality potting mix that allows for good drainage. 'Milk Confetti' does prefer moist soil but will succumb to root rot if constantly sitting in water. The best watering method is to wait until the top inch or so of the soil is dry and then water deeply. Allow any excess to drain away and empty the saucer straight after. During spring and summer, give your plant a boost with a balanced liquid feed around once a month. Or, you can use a slow-release fertilizer if you wish and refresh this every three months. Once you have one of these gorgeous plants gracing your home, you'll want to find out how to quickly propagate Syngonium in water.
