Add The Cutest Cookbook Display Shelf To The Side Of Your Cabinet On A DIY Budget

In small spaces, any extra storage can be a huge bonus, particularly if you find it in previously overlooked spots. The ends of counters and cabinets are often one of these, usually offering a small amount of space that can be very usable for slender storage and can go a long way toward decluttering your kitchen. One great way to accomplish this is to turn the bare side of kitchen cabinets into a stylish cookbook rack that keeps books in place and front side out so you can enjoy them as decor as well.

All you need are some inexpensive 1-by-2 boards cut to size, some paint, and a nail gun. This easy carpentry project is a great way to decorate the boring sides of your kitchen cabinets and pick up some extra storage that's out of the way but still within easy reach. The shelves can also be customized perfectly to your counter width, height, and the number of shelves you desire to fit your collection of cookbooks or other items you'll be storing there.

Creating slender storage on cabinet ends

To create this easy DIY bookshelf, you will need wood measured to fit your bookshelf space both horizontally and vertically. The number of shelves depends on the height of the books you're looking to display. Build the framework by fastening four pieces of wood together with wood glue and brad nails (you could also use a pocket jig and screws for a firmer hold.) Add your shelves that span the middle of the frame, attaching them to each side.

Once assembled, paint the shelves your desired shade of paint or stain them with a wood finish that complements your cabinets. Use screws or nails to affix the unit to the cabinet on the wall and at the end of the cabinet. To hold books in place, add cross bars with the same wood or slender wooden dowels. While this version is simple, you can also add embellishments like ornate moldings to the front of the shelves and cross bars for a more luxe look. Or use a brass rod across the front instead of wood to add some texture and an elevated look.

These shelves are not only great for cookbooks, but could also be used for holding other flat items like platters, cutting boards, and baking sheets. Place it higher on the ends of your upper cabinets to make a stealthy DIY spice rack or small herb garden. With a little more space, you could adapt it with wider planks of wood and use it for holding mugs or glassware.
