The Beautiful DIY Sconce That Brings A Little Of The Outdoors To Your Walls
Wall sconces can be simple yet elegant ways to elevate your home decor style and make the best use of your wall space. Plus, with the Gen Z trend of not using the bright, painful "Big Light," wall sconces are becoming important staples to homes across the world as a cozier lighting alternative. You can always go out and buy yourself a cordless wall sconce or a vintage sconce to add an antique element to your home. But, even if you're new to DIY, you can take on this simple project to make an expensive-looking wall sconce using very affordable items. This particular sconce idea uses spray-painted faux leaves, remote-controlled fairy lights, and a yardstick to make a long vertical sconce that will bring the outdoors inside.
On top of capturing the wall lighting trend of the moment, this DIY craft also optimizes another key trend: biophilic interior decor. This type of design helps humans reconnect with nature, which can boost focus and creativity by emulating the environments that humans typically thrive in. Whether you choose to embrace the greenery and add more leafy luxury to this DIY or keep it classic, spray-painting your greenery, this is a project that anyone can take on and enjoy.
How to make your own wall sconce
Instagram creator @my_home_by_kendra_nicole made the foundation of her own unique nature-inspired wall sconce with two wooden craft boxes and a wooden yardstick. You can grab crafting boxes at Dollar Tree or almost any craft store — or, in place of boxes, try trinket trays like the Joysip mini jewelry trays from Amazon. She used crafting glue to attach the boxes to either end of the measuring stick, with the bottoms of the boxes facing outwards on both sides. Drape some leaves from end to end for an elegant, natural look. You can buy fake plants like the DECGOL artificial ivy vines and spray paint them gold as the Instagrammer did, or paint your yardstick, boxes, and leaves all one color for a cohesive, minimalist look.
Once the decor and base are built and the paint has dried, you can attach the decorative lights that turn this artwork into a functional sconce. Buy some remote-controlled lighting, like the BXROIU fairy light wires, and use the same strategy to attach them to your sconce bases so that they're interspersed and able to emanate plenty of light. If you want a little extra glow, try adding a mirror to the sconce backing to reflect more light. Then, attach a sawtooth picture hanger to the back of the base so that it can easily hang on your wall. Because most fairy lights are battery-powered, you can hang the sconce just about anywhere without needing to plan around electrical sockets.
