Craft A Rustic Vase From Dollar Tree Essentials With This DIY

Trying to achieve a cottagecore aesthetic or just like a little decorative country flair? A rustic vase can be a beautiful addition to any space. While it is easy to style vases in your home, a high-end piece like you might find at Pottery Barn can cost at least $50 and often much more. Luckily, you can get the same gorgeous pottery look for a fraction of the cost using these Dollar Tree essentials: a Jardin glass flower vase, tacky gluebaking soda, and acrylic paint.

If the Jardin vase isn't to your taste, you can find a variety of other styles at Dollar Tree, so choose the one that you think will work best in your home. Then, decide if you want to make a handle or two. If you are including handles, you'll also need air-dry clay and E6000 glue. When deciding on a paint color, neutral tones and pastels work well for a rustic look. And, if you think your color is too bright, you can always try mixing it with some white or cream paint.

Making a glass vase look ceramic

Creating this project is a simple process. Start by forming the handle. Roll air dry clay to ¼ inch thick, and cut it to the size and shape of your desired handle. Use the E6000 to glue one end at the rim of the glass vase and the other about halfway down its side. If you prefer the look of two handles, just add a second one of equal length directly opposite the first handle. Round out the edges and smooth the transition from clay to glass with a little water. Just remember, the handles are more decorative than practical, so pick up your vase by the glass rather than relying on the clay to support your decor.

Paint your vase using a mixture of almost equal parts baking soda and acrylic paint, with a little more paint than baking soda, and a dollop of tacky glue. If you want a thicker texture, swap out the baking soda for joint compound. Let the mixture dry on the vase, then paint another coat. The more coats you apply, the more texture your finish will have.

If you want it to look even more rustic and weathered, add some common ingredients to the paint. Mix coffee grounds in with the baking soda, paint, and glue for an aged look or let the paint mixture dry completely and rub some cinnamon all over the vase for rusted effect. Finally, arrange your flowers using these tricks to keep your bouquet standing up straight.
