The Best Ways To Get Chapstick Stains Out Of Your Clothes, According To Our Expert
Some stains are so stubborn that it takes a bit more than just a cycle in a washing machine to get them out of your clothes. This is the case for Chapstick. It's arguably one of the toughest laundry stains out there. The waxy lip product clings onto fabric fibers and can be a real pain to remove. Although Chapstick stains are stubborn, it's totally possible to eliminate them. It just takes a little extra effort. Zachary Pozniak, COO of Jeeves and YouTuber at The Clean Clean, explained how to free clothes of Chapstick stains in an exclusive interview with House Digest. All you have to do is remove as much of the lip product as you can, apply a stain remover, rinse your garment, and wash it as usual.
This simple process should free your clothes of Chapstick stains with ease. There is no need to dispose of items you assumed were ruined by waxy spots of the lip product. Pozniak's advice should rid you of any anxiety surrounding applying Chapstick while wearing your favorite garments. Just remember to complete the steps before washing and drying your clothes rather than after. It's also a good idea to tackle the stains as soon as you notice them to limit the time the product has to set into fabric fibers.
Follow these steps to get Chapstick out of your clothes
To remove Chapstick stains from your clothes, Pozniak recommends starting out by wiping off excess product. "Use a clean towel to gently scrape off any excess chapstick from the fabric," he shared while speaking exclusively to House Digest. The expert revealed that a quick dab to remove any remaining product from the fabric is the next step. "Take a clean cloth or paper towel and blot the stained area to absorb as much of the chapstick as possible," he specified. "Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain."
Next, you'll need to go in with a stain remover. This is one of those cases where a stain-removal spray is necessary when you're already using laundry detergent. "Use a stain remover or a small amount of dish soap mixed with water," Pozniak shared, elaborating on this step. "Apply it to the stained area and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes." After giving the stain remover some time to work its magic, rinse it out of the fabric with cold water. Next, wash the clothing item according to the instructions on the care label. Do not just toss the garment directly into the dryer after removing it from the washer. Take a look at the fabric to ensure that the stain is completely removed. If it is still there, Pozniak recommends repeating the above steps. Once the stain is gone, place the item into your dryer as you normally would.
Tips to ensure this stain removal method is effective
This stain removal method is super simple, but there are still a few things to keep in mind to ensure you pull it off well. Pozniak revealed it's imperative that you do not dry your Chapstick-stained garment before removing the stain. "The worst thing you can do is tumble dry the stained garment with heat which will likely set it," he explained while speaking exclusively to House Digest. "Make sure to inspect the stain before drying."
There is still hope even if you dried your garment before tackling the stain. According to Pozniak, all you have to do to save your clothes in this case is follow the aforementioned steps but leave the stain remover on for longer. You'll also need to wash them at a higher temperature. Lastly, you might be tempted to create your own DIY laundry spot remover to tackle the Chapstick stains, but Pozniak prefers that you opt for the recommended products for maximum results. "I would stick to dish soap and liquid detergent!" he shared. "If color remains, spray with 3% hydrogen peroxide and dry in the shade/indoors."
