Use A Dollar Tree Plaque To DIY Botanical Wall Art With Country Flair

Is your charming farmhouse chic home missing something? Are your fingers itching to create your own adorable home decor? Lianep, the crafter behind the YouTube channel DIY Beauty on Purpose, assembled the perfect DIY wall hanging for beginner crafters on a budget. Worthy of any wall or door, the result is a folksy plant holder-sign combo emblazoned with the words "Country Roads, Take Me Home." The crown jewel of this piece is a metal desk organizer cup that holds moss and an artificial plant. Whether you follow a tutorial to the letter, or opt to take inspiration from other trendy wall art ideas too, this DIY is the perfect way to dress up a bare spot in your home.

Start with a roughly 8-inch-by-12-inch plaque from Dollar Tree Plus. Choose one that comes with a hanging cord, or purchase a cord separately. If you can't find a wood plaque with those exact dimensions at Dollar Tree, they sell 7-inch-by-9-inch Crafter's Square DIY Wood Plaques that you can embellish with smaller stencils. These Cregugua 8-Pack Blank MDF Wood Plaques from Amazon will also do the trick.

Along with your choice of plaque, you'll need dark wood stain, paint in either black and white (or a different color combination of your choice), and this Generic brand Chicken Wire Stencil. Purchase a StudioR12 Country Roads Take Me Home stencil or letter stencils of your choice. From Dollar Tree, pick up a Metal Desk Accessory Storage Cup, nylon cable ties, floral moss, and artificial greenery. Also set aside a drill, sandpaper, craft glue, rags, and a paintbrush or stencil brush.

Create and customize your plant holder plaque

Begin your wall sign by attaching a rope for hanging your plaque. Either drill holes through the plaque's face to attach the hanging cord, or glue a piece of cord or rope to the back of the plaque. Sand the plaque's face, wipe away the dust, and apply a coating of wood stain. Once dry, place your chicken wire stencil over the plaque. Stipple the lighter-colored paint over the design with a stencil brush or a sponge. Using the darker paint, follow these same steps for the lettering stencils. Be sure to leave space for the mounted metal cup and plant.

Since you'll be affixing the metal cup to the plaque with a nylon tie, drill holes in what's roughly the center of where you cup and plant will sit; make these two holes about 1 ½ inches apart horizontally. Loop a cable tie through the mesh of the cup and through the two drilled holes, fasten it in the back, and trim off the excess. Glue a lining of floral moss inside the cup, and add your plant. Lianep topped off the metal cup with an imitation air plant that's glued in place, but given how easy they are to care for, you could instead make this into a real air plant holder. Just swap out the plastic plant for a live one. Then relax and enjoy your art, or get started on your next easy and affordable Dollar Tree DIY.
