The Decor Trick Jeremiah Brent Uses To Give Homes A Welcoming Feel

If you want to give your home a welcoming touch, Jeremiah Brent is a major fan of a simple decor technique. Brent owns an interior design firm with offices in both New York and Los Angeles. Passionate about design from a young age, a specific childhood activity originally sparked Brent's interior design focus. He also happens to be married to HGTV star Nate Berkus. Whether you have a modern or traditional space, Brent has a few tricks up his sleeve to help you curate a cozy home that still feels contemporary. One of his most important tricks? Instead of cluttering spaces with too much decor, focus on using texture to create a welcoming feel.

He recently had the task of redesigning a former ski school in south Vermont into a winter vacation home. The owners requested a more contemporary approach to the interior, but Brent didn't want to sacrifice a sense of warmth. Although the color palette was predominantly neutral, he relied on texture to add visual interest throughout the space. His key to comfort was incorporating multi-textured details through elements like natural wood and cozy textiles. Discover the integral additions that made this expansive space feel comfy and homey — you may just be inspired to do the same in your own home.

The best ways to add texture to your home

There are several key textures that Jeremiah Brent used to maintain a welcoming atmosphere throughout the lodge-style home. Curtains were crucial to contrast the clean architectural lines. Brent tells House Beautiful that "Double height curtains alongside the clean yet impactful fireplace were integral to my vision for the living room. They really establish the grand scale of the space while maintaining approachability and warmth." For added layers of texture, he also included pieces made of materials like sherpa wool, vintage leather, and linen. Beyond curtains, you can incorporate organic textiles through items like jute rugs, cashmere throws, and cotton bedding.

There are tons of ways to add texture to your home decor. If you want to mimic Brent's technique, try this Comfort Stretch Boucle Storage Ottoman Bench, similar to the wool bench he included at the foot of the guest bed. You can also use a set of Okeysen Leather Dining Chairs that are reminiscent of those selected by Brent. In an interview for Living Spaces on YouTube, Nate Berkus, Brent's husband, says that "The mistake I think a lot of people make when trying to assemble a minimalist interior on their own is that they use everything with perfectly shiny, clean finishes and you need some old wood, you need some old, chippy painted finishes to go with a white sofa." Keeping in line with this approach, consider copper and brass fixtures, two finishes that will develop a perfectly imperfect patina over time.
