Common Mistakes To Avoid With The Popular Color Drench Trend

New trends seem to appear all the time, although you may find that you like some more than others. When designing your home, it's important to focus on decor choices that make you happy. For instance, if you love color — or just one color in particular — the color drenching trend may be right up your alley. House Digest spoke exclusively with Christina Couvillion, design visionary and CEO at Davinci Interiors, to learn more about the color drenching trend and the common mistakes people make when adding this decor trend to their homes.

Color drenching is when you decorate one room of your home in all the same color. An example of this might be painting the ceiling, walls, and trim all in one shade of blue. However, a common mistake people make when color drenching, according to Couvillion, is choosing the wrong color. "Using overly bright or intense colors that can overwhelm the space and make it uncomfortable to spend time in" is one mistake Couvillion noted. Similarly, choosing a color that is too dark can also make the style not fit your original vision. "If you wish for the room to feel moody and rich, then a dark color is the perfect approach, but if you wish for the room to feel open and airy, opt for lighter to mid tone colors," Couvillion explained.

How to avoid these color drenching mistakes

While big mistakes can often make or break a design choice, if you know what these mistakes are, they can be avoided. When House Digest spoke exclusively with Christina Couvillion, she explained how color drenching mistakes can easily be avoided. If you decide to try the trend, Couvillion suggested that you start in a small area of your home rather than committing to a larger room. For example, give a small half bathroom or office a color drenching makeover before trying this trend in your living room or bedroom.

Couvillion also recommended purchasing a high-quality paint. "Invest in good paint to ensure a smooth, even finish, as imperfections are more noticeable with this technique," she said. "Incorporate layered lighting (overhead, task, and accent) to enhance the mood and highlight the drenching effect." Also, make sure that your paint choices match the rest of your home, especially the surrounding rooms.

One important piece of advice Couvillion shared about choosing the right color for the space is to consider what emotions the color you choose evokes. "Ask yourself how you want to feel in the space," Couvillion said. "Colors in a room can significantly influence how a person feels, as they interact with our emotions, perceptions, and even physical responses." Creating a balanced space

No matter if you are 100% sure about your new paint color or still on the fence, Christina Couvillion explained during her exclusive interview with House Digest the importance of testing the paint color first. The common paint swatching testing method that everyone gets wrong is one you will certainly want to avoid. Make sure you paint large swatches of the color on your walls in different spots and observe the color at different times of the day. This way you will know what the color looks like in different lighting.

You will also want to consider what other items you will be putting in the room that will help balance the space. "Introduce textures to add dimension, such as velvet furniture, natural wood, or textured rugs," Couvillion explained. "Use matte paint finishes for a softer, enveloping feel or semi-gloss for a modern, reflective effect." She also recommended introducing other items in the same color, but not necessarily the same shade of the color. "Layer different tones of the same color in the furniture, accessories, and decor for depth," she explained. "For example, if you're drenching in navy, include lighter blue or slate-colored textiles."

Choosing to follow the color drenching trend and paint one space in your house all one color may seem like a bold step. However, it can create amazing results. If you are ready, give it a try in the best areas in your house to try the color drench trend.
