How To Choose The Right Color Gravel (And Does It Enhance Curb Appeal)
From zen pathways to cottage driveways, gravel front yards continue to be a go-to choice for countless homeowners — and for good reasons. Not only is gravel versatile, but it's also cost-effective and low maintenance. Oh, and it comes in a surprising selection of colors, too. This raises the question: Which one makes the best first impression? Should you go with snowy white to make the landscape pop or stick to timeless gray? Or what if you pick beige gravel for a warm and welcoming feel?
We consulted Lindsey Schmidt (@livingfreewithlindsey), a licensed realtor in Virginia, on how to choose the best gravel color to increase your home's curb appeal. To our surprise, it doesn't matter as much as we think. Sure, the right shade can enhance your front yard (to some extent), but there are so many other effective ways to do this (like making sure the gravel is clean and uniformly spread). "You don't want it to be the focal point, rather a clean, manicured look that complements the home and surroundings," Schmidt shared in her exclusive interview with House Digest.
The dos and don'ts of choosing a gravel color
Start by narrowing down your choices to the colors that actually suit your outdoor scheme. For instance, red-toned gravel might look too old-fashioned in a modern garden, while black rocks could create too dark of a contrast in a colorful setting. "Ideally, you'll have something fairly neutral, that complements the home's exterior color, color of window shutters, and any other permanent exterior feature," Schmidt exclusively told House Digest. On that note, maybe even have it match (or be slightly lighter/darker) than your porch to make the decision-making process easier.
Because the goal is to create a cohesive front garden, Schmidt says to avoid any color that overtakes the rest of the exterior. Instead, think of the gravel as a subtle backdrop for outdoor elements — like plants, flowers, and architectural details — to stand out. That right there is guaranteed to maximize curb appeal.
Why the color of gravel doesn't have a major impact on curb appeal
When asked about the importance of the color of gravel in improving a home's curb appeal, here's what Schmidt had to say in her exclusive chat with House Digest: "Gravel color is something I hear less about than the amount and placement of the gravel." She continues that her buyer clients tend to comment on bald spots before the color. So the takeaway here? Your choice of gravel shouldn't be a major concern, as long as it's neutral or complements the surroundings.
Further, don't despair if your outdoor area is already covered in gravel but looks a little old and faded. Rather than replacing it, you could paint the existing gravel rocks to give your landscape a fresh new look. Again, your best bet would be a hue that doesn't command as much attention. This could be white if you're working with a light and airy exterior, charcoal if your roof is the same color, or perhaps mixed brown gravel to tie in with the varied tones of a brick façade.
