How Fixer Upper's Joanna Gaines Makes A Bed Look Luxurious And Elevated
There are a lot of tips out there to make your bed look nice, but styling your bed like a designer usually requires, well, a designer. But according to Joanna Gaines, host of "Fixer Upper" and interior design expert known for her stunning and attainable home styling, making your bed look stylish, inviting, and — best of all — cozy is easier than you think. The trick? Focus on what you love. "[Look for] bedding that's practical, but also pretty," she tells Country Living. "You can find a blend that's both, and that's comfortable and not stuffy."
And don't forget a solid sleeping pillow. Gaines adds, "[Choose] just basic, good pillows to lay your head on at night. These are the pillows you don't see. They're what you lay your head on." Lean into solid foundations like good pillows and choose the best mattress for you, then identify the textures you love that will help you create an elevated, luxurious bed you won't want to leave.
How to build the comfy, stylish bed of your dreams
To make the most luxurious bed possible, first pick your preferences. Do you sleep hot or cold? Are there textures you love? Identifying this first will help you decide which layers to include and what kind of textures and weights you want. Once you've narrowed down your preferences, start building your bed.
Start with solid fitted and flat sheets. If you live in a climate with intense seasons, consider picking up flannel sheets for winter and a pair of lighter sheets, like linen or percale, for summer. Next, start adding heavier layers like quilts, duvets, or comforters. Hot sleepers might be tempted to just have a light quilt, but to achieve a truly luxurious feel, choose both a quilt and a heavier layer, like a duvet or comforter. (You can always take it off when you go to bed.) That mesh of textures provides an elevated feel. Fold the quilt to cover three-quarters of the bed, then lay the duvet down on top. Fold it back halfway, and fluff for texture. Or, to show off the quilt's pattern, lay the duvet down first, fold it back, then spread the quilt on top under the fold. Grab two comfy sleeping pillows, two shams, and any pillows you'd like to arrange on top for the perfect cozy feel. Add a blanket horizontally across the base of the bed or over one corner, and you're ready for a cozy night's sleep.
