Elevate Your Decor With A Hanging Shelf Hack Using Dollar Tree Cutting Boards
We can always use more wall storage, and when we can make some for just a few dollars, it's even better. We've seen tutorials for cute Dollar Tree hanging shelves in the past, but a clever new method combines form, function, and affordability. By picking up a couple of Cooking Concepts Bamboo Cutting Boards from Dollar Tree and tying them together, you can create an adorable and practical two-tiered hanging shelf.
This easy DIY involves two tools and two supplies and comes together in less than an hour. There are so many places you can use these shelves — from displaying holiday decor to creating a small herb garden in your kitchen. You can even use them as bathroom shelves to help maximize your space. To put together your own DIY shelf, you'll need two cutting boards, a spool of jute twine, a glue gun, and a drill with a bit that's around the same diameter as the jute cord.
The bamboo finish of the cutting boards is attractive as is, but it's also the perfect blank slate. Make this handmade hanging shelf your own by giving it a coat of paint that complements your house. If jute isn't your style, try using a more decorative cord, or wrap the jute with another material. You can even braid ribbons or ropes together to create a custom cord.
Piece your shelf DIY together
Cut two long pieces of jute cord to at least 8 feet or more each. This length will provide plenty of excess to accommodate whatever amount of space you need between the two shelves, as well as the space between the hanging loop and the top shelf. Drill a hole in each of the four corners of the cutting boards, about ½ an inch to 1 inch from the edges.
Add a dab of hot glue to a cut end of one of the jute cord pieces to prevent fraying, and pass it through one of the holes in the first cutting board. Pull the cord through, and pass the end through the hole in the corner diagonal to your starting hole. Leave enough slack in the cord between the two holes to account for both a hanging loop and space between the hanger and the top shelf. Use the other length of jute to repeat this process in the remaining two holes. Even out the cords and knot them below the cutting board.
Next, pass the loose ends of the cords through one hole each on the second cutting board. Once you've arranged the cords to even lengths and allowed for your desired amount of space between the shelves, knot each cut end of the cord on the underside of the bottom cutting board. Reinforce the knots with hot glue. Finally, form a knot at the top of the loops to act as a hanger.
