No One Will Guess Your Stylish Remote Holder Is Made From A Repurposed CD
Doesn't it seem like everything you buy today has a remote? From LED candles to air purifiers, managing your households' many remotes can be a little chaotic. It gets even trickier when they vary so much in size thanks to their different functions. Some might be as large as an old landline phone, but others, like a Roku remote, can fit in the palm of your hand. Have you ever spent time trying to hunt down the TV remote from the deep recesses of your couch, racing to mute the television during a loud commercial? Ah, technology! Well, despair not. You can keep your remotes together with a handy repurposing project using old compact disc, or CDs, decorative paper, and some glue.
Wired TV remotes were around since the technology's early days, but wireless remotes became mainstream with the arrival of household cable TV boxes, VCRs, and DVD players. Today, as electronics evolve, they often seem to include a remote for easy operation. This is an easy DIY project to make sure you have a way to keep them within reach. Even if you're a massive music fan who still prizes the old-school appeal of CDs, there's a chance you might have a scratched disc or two in your collection, maybe even a long-forgotten single (remember those?). There are multiple ways to repurpose CDs around your home, so consider turning them into something new. In less time than it takes to listen to the CDs, you can transform them into your new remote holder.
The remix: Turn CDs into a stylish remote holder
There are many stylish DIY ways to organize remotes around the house, but CDs offer a unique way to make a holder. You'll want to find at least two CDs you no longer need, but add a third if you want to give your holder a base. Once you have them at hand, take the cardboard of an empty tape roll and glue it between the two CDs. Another alternative is to use a piece of cardboard of similar width to the discs, bending it to form a circle. The cardboard/tape roll when combined with the CDs will form a pocket to hold your remotes. You can cover up the hole in the disc with a decorative decal or contact paper, then use it to line the edges.
After you have your remote pocket, you can decide to glue a third CD to form a remote holder that sits on your coffee table or bookcase. If you'd rather hang your remote holder on the wall, punch a small hole in the top of one of the CDs with a screwdriver or sharp object. You can thread rope or twine to hang it via a nail or Command hook to keep track of smaller remotes for fans or accent lighting. That's just the start of repurposing these old or unwanted items, however. Customize it and make it one of your top 40 DIYs with these tips.
The B-side, or customizing your new remote holder
For a chart-topping look, try customizing your remote holder. You can choose any number of styles of contact paper as an enhancement, but don't stop there. Dress up the shiny silver surface with Artecho Acrylic Paint in a colorful shade, or go for glam with a coat of metallic gold paint. If you're feeling adventurous, go big and add some sparkle with glitter. Even the twine or rope can be accented with beads, such as the Heart Rock Assorted Glass Beads Mix for pitch-perfect décor.
You could even turn your albums into a mini, well, album! Print out a collection of your favorite family snapshots, then decoupage them onto the surface with Mod Podge Gloss Sealer. You'll see the loving face of your family every time you reach for the remote, and it will remind you of the good times, especially if your kids are waging a battle over the next cartoon they'll watch.
