The 6th Edition Drop Of The IKEA Nytillverkad Line Reimagines Past Chair Designs

IKEA is looking to the past to inform its future. When Ingvar Kamprad began the company in 1943 — at just 17 years old — he sold things like pens and wallets. Today, IKEA is one of the most valuable brands in the world, and that has largely been on the back of its simple, affordable furniture. Now the company is looking to its history with the sixth edition of the Nytillverkad collection, which reimagines chairs from past collections, representing designs from the 1960s through the 1990s.

IKEA recently announced four new standalone chairs will be available to the public in February 2025. The collection features designs from Niels Gammelgaard and Gill Lundgren, bringing back a chair from 1967 as the DYVLINGE swivel armchair in orange. The new red SOTENÄS armchair had its origins in 1969 as PUCK. Additionally, the MOFALLA is made of steel tubes, bringing back a foldable chair that made its debut as the COX in 1978.

IKEA's timing is impeccable. Mid-century modern design has been having a moment for several years. The fashions of the 1980s have been making their way back into culture — and so are some '80s interior design trends. Meanwhile, the 1990s are coming back in a big way. And luckily, the nostalgic Nytillverkad line happens to include more than just a few chairs.

What else is in the Nytillverkad collection?

People who love bright, minimalist spaces will enjoy this IKEA collection, which embraces bold colors. Karin Gustavsson, creative leader of the Nytillverkad collection, said in statement, "We have pulled inspiration from four decades, reimagining the pieces to feel fresh and new. You will find a palette of bold colours, as well as softer, curvier accent pieces and playful prints to make every day that little bit more joyful."

Even if you are not in the market for new chairs, there may be something for you in this collection. A 1985 shelving unit from Niels Gammelgaard will return as BYAKORRE, with reversible shelves edged with blue, green, yellow, and red. (If you can't handle that much color, it also comes in white!) The NOVETTE benches from 1963, originally designed by Erik Wørts, are coming back as the GUTTANE side and coffee tables.

Look for linens and vases as well. The ÄNGSVITVINGE bed linen is inspired by Sven Fristedt's 1973 blue and white textile pattern. And the 1990s are also represented, with Anna Efverlund's MODIG KORN bed linen from 1997 getting a black and white makeover as KLIPPBRÄCKA.
