Don't Toss Aluminum Cans When You Could Reuse Them For Sweet Storage Instead
If you're feeling overwhelmed by all of the bits and bobs in your home, it might be time to invest in some storage containers. In the bathroom, hair ties, cotton swabs, and bobby pins can quickly become a disorganized mess if not sorted properly, and the same can be said for various junk and craft drawers in the home. One option to get the clutter in order is to take a trip to The Container Store for products that will help you organize your bathroom. If you want to be more eco-friendly and save some money, however, you can also create beautiful storage containers with items you almost definitely already have on hand — old aluminum cans!
Youtube creator Upcycle DesignLab shows just how easy it is to transform old soda, seltzer, and other types of aluminum cans into adorable, tiny pots. The containers are highly versatile too in terms of what you can use them for— they're perfect for finally organizing the dreaded junk drawer, and can be a clever storage solution for craft supplies like buttons, googly eyes, beads, and other small items. All you need to have on hand to turn old aluminum cans into little storage containers is scissors, glue, and a Lift Beer Soda Can Opener to cleanly remove the tops of the cans. However, you may want to also have some paint handy so you can style these adorable repurposed empty soda cans.
How to turn old aluminum cans into adorable tiny storage pots
To get started with this DIY storage project, gather your tools and your aluminum cans. It's not a bad idea to also grab a pair of safety gloves, since you'll be cutting metal. Then, remove the pop tabs, place them off to the side, and use your can opener to carefully remove the lids of the cans. Once the lids are off, you'll want to measure where to make your cuts, which can be roughly a little over an inch above the bottom of the can, and a little over an inch below the top of the can. After cutting along the lines, you should be left with two cylindrical pieces of the same height. Note that it will take two aluminum cans to make one container. After making the proper cuts on your first can, you'll remove the bottom of the second can, and cut off any excess so all you're left with is the little silver concave bottom of the can.
When the cuts are completed, attach the bottom of the second can to the top of the first to create the pot lid. Feel free to add beads or buttons for a lid handle. For the side handles, you'll take your two pop tabs, fold them in half, and glue them to the side of the pot. Then, attach the two pieces to put it together, and wrap up the project by painting the pot or giving it a lovely copper finish. Finally, enjoy your new tiny storage pots and all the newfound organization they bring to your home.
